Ooohhh! The Middle Ages! Did you need any technology other than Chivalry, or was there more to your approach for this game? Pre-build Horsemen for upgrade, or just power-build WE's? Or push for Cavalry? Any AI giving you problems?

Predator class, intended conquest victory but got domination.

Upon entering the Middle Ages in 510 BC, I built no more settlers. I never did settle the area south of our core. I built a few more workers to add to cities to get everywhere up to size 12, but it was pretty much nothing but military from here on.

Both Sumeria and Ottomans got Engineering as their free tech. I bought it for Republic, then researched Monotheism at full speed completed in 330 BC. I opted to turn research off at that point while waiting for the AI to complete Feudalism which I traded for in 50 BC. It only took 4 turns to complete Chivalry, at which point research was permanently shut down as all cash went to rushing elephants.

The Sumerians were the strongest AI in my game. My first 2 armies turned south to raze Sumerian cities while my individual war elephants went west to kill everyone else in an attempt to eliminate all tribes at around the same time.

The good wonders were built far away in my game. The Sumerians had the Pyramids in a city on their southern coast, and the Ottomans built the Temple of Artemis (captured in 390 AD).

Elimination dates:

Earlier (didn’t record the date) – Hittites.
410 – Vikings.
440 – English.
470 – French & Ottomans.
480 – Portuguese

The Sumerians had 2 cities left in 480, and I had stacks outside each of them, but I wasn’t paying attention to the domination limit. A couple cultural expansions from the ToA during the interturn gave me a domination victory in 490 AD.

We had entered the MA in 630BC with 2 contacts and 2 galleys exploring for more. We met the Vikings in 590BC, France in 550BC, Sumeria in 490BC, Ottomans in 210BC and the Portugese in 70BC. Research in the MA was monotheism learned in 470BC and traded for feudalism and then Chivalry in 270BC. We traded for engineering in 210BC.

We had continued to settle the peninsula and could have used some phony wars, but didn't set these up until war started in 30BC. At this point we had 23 towns and a grand total of 7 war elephants and an archer. When chivalry was learned we only had one horseman and we would have been better served to slow research and build more horsemen for upgrades allowing war to start sooner.

War went well, however, and we only lost 1 war elephant destroying the Hittites in 230AD and getting our first army and our first two doses of war happiness. By 290AD we were at war with everyone, but occasionally made peace to keep the ai's who all learned invention fighting each other. When the GA ended in 350AD we had 50 war elephants and 2 armies.

The Ottomans had built the ToA and the Sumerians the Pyramids and these weren't captured until around 500AD. England was destroyed in 420AD, the French in 440AD, and the Ottomans in 540AD. War elephants proved extremely durable and we had a lot of elites producing many armies. I had built the Heroic Epic and gotten 10 leaders used for 9 armies and a rushed Pentagon by the end of the game. An enjoyable game, but judging by the good starts of others will be beaten by most.

1000 BC we had entered Middle Ages. Get Feudalism and Monotheism from Sumeria and Ottomans for Republic and some gpt.

Plan
Full speed to war elephants, then start GA quickly by attacking Hittites, stall research.
Raze Sumerian town with TGL (and SoZ :( ) to stay away from education. ToA is the target.

470 BC (?) start GA with attack on Hittites. 6 horses and 4 war elephants...
270 AD France killed.
280 AD England bites the dust.
340 AD the (felt) 101st elite victory finally gives us an MGL...

350 AD C3C crashes when I hit F3... I had just gotten another MGL :gripe:
reload from autosave...

390 AD erase Sumeria. Attack Ottomen and capture ToA.
420 AD Vikings killed. ToA still ours :shifty: 70 elephants on the run from Sumeria to Ottoman land.
430 AD ToA town had flipped, retaken immediately.
440 AD Ottomen defeated. Just Portugal left :hammer:
450 AD ToA temples expand our cultural borders to 71% - domination victory.

Hi,
I don"t know, what are the mean of TGL and SoZ. If it is Technical great leader, how to get it, because it is not allowed on COTM games.

Thanks

Hi back. And welcome to the Gotm community. :wavey:

TGL is common short term for The Great Library (not to mix up with GLH = Great Lighthouse).
SoZ means Statue of Zeus.

I had to raze the town so I won't get any techs from TGL.
That would have included education, making the Temple of Artemis (ToA, providing free temples in every town on the continent) obsolete.
I had based my strategy on taking ToA and reaching domination limit five turns after capturing it.
My towns were spaced widely so ToA's temples almost doubled my territory in a single turn.

On TxCraig's request here's a screenshot showing my core at the end of the game. Capital is of course in Delhi, and the Forbidden Palace was built in Karachi in 50AD. Don't know whether this is the best spot, but at that time it was the best available. Harran might have been better, but that would have delayed it until after the conquest of Hittitia and building a ring of decent cities around Harran would have taken even longer. And I think I once read in a thread of SirPleb's that in C3C the location of the FP is not that important, it's more important to get it early.

The cities with decent production are marked red.
