COTM 53 First Spoiler - the Ancient Age!

Reading Requirements
  1. You must be able to research a Middle Age technology.

Posting Restrictions
  • Please be discreet about AI locations; however, feel free to discuss contacts and trades. Limit any screenshots to within 15-20 moves of the starting location.
  • No discussions of the middle ages (or later)
  • No screenshots of any middle-age (or later) resources.
  • Absolutely NO discussion of any other currently active 'X'OTM!

The starting location does have bonus food sources just out in the fog. Did you settle in place or move? The map is somewhat smaller - did the AI box you in or were you able to grab enough land for your empire? Any other happenings of note? And did you find your Bowmen of use, or did you avoid using them?

Woohoo, got the first post!

Thought I could see something in the fog NNW, but settled Babylon in place anyway - very pleased to find the game too. Put research to IW at min, figured on a small map I'd get contacts and trade early on. Wasn't expecting my first warrior to take one step and see some Incans in 3700BC - I know it's small but that's too close for my liking. Get pottery from them, build another worker then granary, then bowman, then mainly settlers (became 4 turner at 1990BC). First warrior keeps walking, meets Egypt 3450BC, Arabs 3150BC, Greeks 3050BC, Persia 1990BC, Aztecs 1870BC. Finding everyone so early I go for buying techs rather than research. No barb problems but no goodies either - were there any huts or did I just miss them?

1700 BC the Incans demand 28g – can only see a warrior around so figure I’ll take the war happiness and tell them to get knotted. 1600 BC they get some warriors to Ashur and get whipped by my bowmen, unfortunately triggering my GA. Never mind, Babylon can now do a four turn cycle putting out both a settler and a warrior, and once I get Ivory hooked up Nineveh switches to SoZ, completing 1075BC.

Founded Nineveh NW on lake in 2350BC, Ashur to N 1990BC, Ellipi to the E1675BC, Akkad on SE coast 1450BC, Uruk to E 1325BC, Eridu NE 1075BC.

1000BC: 7 towns, 20 pop, 9 workers, 7 warriors, 6 swordsmen, 6 bowmen, 5 temples, 1 granary, 1 barracks, 209 gold, and SoZ.

Iron got connected in 1000BC so did mass upgrade of warriors and went after the Incans, since I was running short on space anyway. Reduced them to one city in 650BC so took peace for all their techs (6) and entered MA - Greeks there already. Think I'll probably keep on fighting since I've got SoZ, but who knows.......

Going for a Domination Victory

THE ANCIENT CITY of Babylon was founded, it is said, at the beginning
of time at the bend of a river. Plentiful sources of food were not to
be found in the vicinity, but were soon discovered at a comfortable
distance.

A GOD CALLED CIV_STEVE had told the leader of the Babylonians that
many tribes would inhabit the earth, so he purposed to send emissaries
in all directions before he would turn his mind mainly to learning the
art of Government as a Republic. His third priority would be to
increase his realm through settlements around his capital.

BABYLON built three Warriors and then hurried to send out a Settler
towards the Incans, whose settlement had been spotted in the west --
as well as wide fields where Cattle grazed. At this time, also the
Persians and the Egyptians had met with the Babylonians. A second
Worker was sent out from Babylon to improve the lands.

BY THE TIME of their discovery of Alphabet, the Babylonians had met
also with the Greeks and were able to trade with all tribes for the
knowledge of several useful arts as well as a horde of Slaves. A
Granary, based on the new knowledge of Pottery, was now being
constructed in Babylon. As it was completed in 2230 BC, Babylon could
immediately start sending out Settlers every four turns.

NINEVEH had been placed far to the south-west under the mountains in
order to ward off Incan expansion. It produced three Warriors, a
Worker and a Bowman before completing its Barracks, and then
Horsemen. Ashur went to the north-west by the Cattle and Coast. After
cultural expansion through a cheap Babylonian Temple, it had access to
Incense. It built military units but it also needed an Aqueduct in
order to grow properly. These three were then the really strong cities of
the Babylonian empire.

ELLIPI was placed by the Coast in the south and Akkad was squeezed in
between Egyptian cities in the east, failing to claim any of the
sources of Wine in the area. Uruk went by the fish-rich Lake in the
north and Eridu expanded the realm furhter to the north-west. Samarra
then through its superior cultural influence -- the cult of civ_steve
-- stole a source of Wine from the Egyptians to the north-east of
Babylon.

BY THIS LATE DATE in the Babylonian history, The Republic had already
been discovered as a corollary to the art of Philospophy. At the end
of 1400 BC, Anarchy spread in Babylon. Republic was established in
1350 BC.

WITH THE DISCOVERY of Writing, Babylon had become able to establish Embassies and
did so with Greece and Arabia. An Alliance against Greece was signed
with Arabia. A similar game was played with Persia and the Aztecs a
few turns later. As Arabia broke the Alliance, the Babylonians could
ally Greece and Egypt against it. The war with Arabia would keep the
people happy for most of the Babylonian history.

SOME TIME BEFORE the Middle Ages, a Babylonan general had noted: "With

Holding off Golden Age for a few more turns using Horsemen only to
fight."

AS THEIR MILITARY strength now quickly grew, the Babylonians decided
to finally throw in their fearless Bowmen, their secret weapon, into
the fight against Egypt, and a Golden Age followed. Soon the Incans
could be provoked to declare war as well. Agum, who emerged as a Great
Military Leader in 800 BC, helped to accelerate the construction of a
Forbidden Palace in Akkad.

Open – Going for a Military Victory

Babylon was founded immediately. The Incans were quickly discovered and the early Babylonian nation was unsettled by the number of Incan warriors heading over the mountains. Fortunately they appeared intent on hunting Barbs than causing harm to Babylon. Egypt and the Arabs were in turn contacted before the second city of Nineveh was founded on the coast to the West to stop the approach of Incan cities and to take possession of the cattle. Next Greece was contacted before the third city of Ashur was founded to the Northwest to take possession of the cattle and connect the incense.

Ellipi, the fourth city, was founded on the coast to the south to block off the Incan expansion. Then Akkad to the Northwest and Uruk a little further to take possession of the wines. Expansion continued towards the North and Northwest with the founding of Erdu, Samarra and Nippur. Eulbar was founded to the East to stop the expansion of the Egyptians. During the expansion of Babylon, first the Incans demanded 22g, swiftly followed by the Greeks demanding 21g. Both demands were granted but the Babylonians would remember these transgressions and exact a revenge given time.

Babylon researched for the Republic slingshot and discovered Alphabet, Writing, Code of Laws, Philosophy and finally Republic was received for free. The techs of Pottery, Masonry, The Wheel and Warrior Code were traded along the way. The Babylonians held a swift revolution before the Republic of Babylon was formed.

With the unique knowledge of the Babylonians the technologies of Mathematics, Iron Working, Horse Back Riding, Mysticism, Polytheism and Map Making were traded.

As the expansion of the Babylonian nation slowed the energies were switched to producing a military force. Republic was traded to the Incans to obtain their technologies, drain their coffers and throw their government into Anarchy. The very next turn a Declaration of War was issued and the cities of Tiwanaku, Corihuaryachina and their capital Cuzco were captured and Vilcamba was destroyed. The successful Babylonian Bowmen triggered a Golden Age which was used to produce a vast number of Horsemen.

With the boost of the Golden age the Technologies of Construction and then currency were completed and the Middle Age was entered in 530bc.

4000 BC Worker SE to BG; Settle in place; Start Alpha at 90%, due in 32.

3650 BC Meet an Incan warrior. Trade BW + CB for Pottery + 10 g.

3000 BC Meet an Egyptian warrior, they're up Masonry.

2670 BC Alphabet completes; start writing at minimum.

2590 BC Ninevah is built on the river to the South. See Egyptian borders to the east.

2110 BC Incans declare war.

1740 BC There's 3 Incan warriors threatening my underprotected capital. I give them 60 g to make peace.

With 6 turns left on CoL, I check what I can get for Writing. It is the same as earlier, so I hold off. In the IBT, the Incans must pop a hut, because suddently they and Eqypt have it. So much for that trade opportunity. I meet Alex the same time, so I trade him Writing for IW and 30g.

1200 BC Meet the Arabs. Trade them IW + alpha for Myst and The Wheel.

1075 BC Get Phil & Republic. Trade CoL + Phil to Egypt for Poly, WC, Mason + 260g. Trade CoL + PHil to greece for Math +HBR. Don't switch to Republic yet, but almost large enough to make it worthwhile.

Not long after, I revolt to Republic and declare on the Inca's. I take three of their cities, auto-raze two others, and leave them with a couple of towns in the tundra. I also use the Bowmen to start my GA; earlier than I usually like, but late enough to be useful.

QSC stats:

Quick run down of my game.
I moved worker and spotted cow, so moved towards it.

Sent my first warrior west and met Inca, stole his worker and got chased around by 8 warriors before he agreed to sign a peace deal. Met Egygt right after. I went wc first because i thought the map would be more smaller and I could go early ga and kill everyone close by, but that was not to be. I ended up trading wc for pot and then went straight for slingshot republic, which i eventually got. I only researched wc/alpha/writing/phil/code and currency. I traded for rest and got into MA on 1000bc and got mono as free tech.

QSC stats (though not submitted, deadline was like 2 weeks ago :():
1 City
12 Towns
46 pop
12 workers
1 warrior (disbanded most after republic)
1 horsemen
2 bowmen

6 contacts
Wines, horses, incenses and furs from egygt hooked up.
All AA techs (except monarchy) and mono.

Picture below is one turn after I entered MA (traded my way into MA and didn't want to replica, just for the picture)
