COTM 67 Spoiler2: End of the Middle Ages



Reading Requirements:

  1. Must be able to research an Industrial Age Technology.
  2. Must have contact with all remaining civs and full knowledge of the map.

Posting restrictions

  1. No maps showing Industrial or Modern resources.
  2. No discussion of Industrial Age (or later).
  3. Absolutely NO discussion of any other active 'X'OTM Contest

The English UU shows up during this age ... finally ... near the end of it. So, did you make use of the Man o'War? Kick off a Golden Age, or did you manage that earlier? And how is your game going? Firmly in control or is there more work to do?
 
230 BC: Revolt draw 7 turns anarchy, trade Spain Republic for Monotheism, Monarchy and 63 g.
170 BC: Theodora demands 44g... paid.
90 BC: Republic! Finally...
10 AD: Meet Greece who is way back in the AA.
170 AD: Egypt looks like she may declare, make a deal to buy Feudalism for 139 gpt + 59g. Also get a RoP so that if she declares, I get Feudalism basically free.
IBT: She declares and I lose one undefended town.
300 AD: Peace with Egypt, gain RoP, Theology, Chivalry, for 131 gpt, +14 g. Still earning 85 gpt. FP in 4.
550 AD: Egypt and Spain get Econ. Massive wonder cascade.
IBT: Spain builds Smith's (so much for that path to GA).
880 AD: Spain, Theodora, and Egypt have ToG, and Spain has Magnetism and is in the Industrial ages. I just made a deal with Scandinavia to get Saltpeter, so time to start upgrading. I have 42 turns left on Magnetism, but once my gpt deals expire, I may have to start up research again.
910 AD: Spain eliminates the Arabs.
930 AD: Buy Magnetism, start building Man O' War..., all knights have been upgraded, will work on pikes and spears next. Trade Magnetism +49 gpt and some gold to Egypt for ToG to enter Industrial age. 29 cities (1st) 214 pop (1st), 7th in land area. 23 slaves, 3 workers, 17 Cav, 12 Longbow, 3 pike, 2 caravel, 2 MDI, 1 settler, spear, musket, knight. Generating 725 gpt (709 gpt currently involved in trades). Spain has Nationalism, Germany and Theodora have Steam and Medicine.

Time to contemplate a war to kickstart my GA. Taking a deep breath....
 
i have already got that far before the spoilers were out, so i´ll start with the story here...

2310 meet Germany, trade Mas for WC+TW

2070 Germany has Writing,
1950 barb horses appear from the fog and kill a worker and a settler pair! :cry:

1425 meet Greece, very backwards
1350 deny a demand and get WH from Egypt, ally the neighbors against her
1250 to my surprise find a 3rd lux on starting island
1225 meet Arabia, backwards
am first to CoL, set for Republic

730 Byzanz demand and declare – this is getting eerie. they must have researched currency this turn, too, as they enter the MA and obviously draw Feud
710 in a mini invasion of the island just in the north i manage to take one Egyptian town.
650 have learnt Rep on ibt, make peace with my neighbors after a failed attempt to take another Egyptian town and revolt, draw 7 turns :-(
550 during anarchy make peace with Theo, buy currency and enter MA. gift Germany and Greece up, both get Feud. easily get it for an optional.

total lose 1 pop, 1 worker, 1 settler and several 100 gold to barbs in my aa...

510bc rearrange everything as entering Republic
Egypt build one towns in my tundra area
370 FP completed in 2nd ring city
310 have 1 SF and 2 WF operating
70 found first town on the big island to the west
10ad Egypt build TGLib
have to give in to an Egyptian demand as my east is totally undefended. i sure will pay them more than they wanted soon!
techs were crawling slow so far given this is Deity.
50ad build town on western iron
am unlucky with leaders and my elites. the elites die and if they win, no leaders emerge
260 GP in on last ibt, see that only available source was claimed by a Spanish town
370 see and kill Ragnar´s first berserk. they have their GA started, that´s for sure.
390 culturally snap saltpeter from Spain. ally several civs against Egypt. still fighting with horses, spears (a few pikes) and trebs. Egypt has knights...
i upgrade a few myself and make a dent on the land of the pharao. before 500ad i take the lead in all relevant statistics and take the both islands to the north with force. then i wait for cavs for the attack on mainland Egypt.
530 invade Egypt with whatever i could upgrade and muster within short preparation.
560 take Thebes with TGLib with 2nd attempt although they have only pikes. bad RNG.
get Edu, PP, Banking and Astro from it. go for Phyics.
progress goes well with cavs against Egypt. MT gets researched by someone and immediately traded around. can you believe it, i got my first MGL only in 630ad, with my 38th elite victory! but then i get a 2nd with the 40th.
650 Egypt destroyed
670 declare on France, they still have spears as top defenders, so it´s a walk in the park. take all their visible cities within 2 turns, but there must be a settler wandering around.
700 war against Spain starts, my until then best trading partner, first Man-o-War built.
710 enslave French ship and kick off GA
730 go industrial, want steam as my last tech.
780 Spain says goodbye to this civ world

it´s now about mopping up the world fast, but first i´ll go skiing for some days. will play and deliver the rest after that.

I have fallen behind a little in tech as I enter the IA. I've eliminated the Vikings and am about to finsh off the Byzantines so I'm a decent size (in the lead with about 30% landmass). Spain and Arabia have declared and are providing much war happiness. Fortunately Spain is also at it with Egypt and The Dutch. I started a GA with Mo'Ws and am reaserching medicine as nobody has it yet. I'm a little concerned about Spain with culture. They are by far the leader there. I'll clean up a few nearby Spanish and Arabian island towns then try for an invasion of the mainland to at least take out a few core Spanish Cities. I am up tech with Egypt so I can use that to get an alliance and RoP as one avenue of attack. We'll see how it goes with Spain. If I can slow down their cultural gain then a few VCs should be possible.
 
Through the middle ages I picked up 3 wonders (Shakespeare, Copernicus, Newton) and Madrid built Knights Templar. The whole world is at war with Spain and by the end of the MA we are starting to make progress. I'm also beginning to make up ground culturally, but I'm still way behind. On the other hand, the chances of losing some other way if I wait to hit 20K are so big that it is probably silly to worry about Madrid.
