Hello everyone! I am a huge fan of the Civ series and have a lot of ideas in my head. However I lack the expertise to create any of them.

1) Is there, or could there be a mod that would allow the construction of canals? Perhaps create a unit such as an engineer or even have a worker upgrade to an engineer and have him able to create a canal where certain ships may be able to pass through.

2) Create units that are able to travel on rivers?

Thanks to everyone who have created mods so far... I have downloaded and tried most of them and they are fantastic!! Keep up the great work!! :goodjob: And if anyone needs help with research, such as researching new civs... lemme know!! :D

sounds like a great idea - if it is possible.... how long should you be able to make this canal?

I was thinking canals could be used to cross 5 - 8 squares? And give a bonus hammer??

They could also/or give a few points in commerce due to all the shipping that passes through the canal.

Sounds great - perhaps someone could show me, or link me on how to create a mod and I can do it myself...

I've always wanted a canal builder, ever since civ2.

How you could do it is a worker could be used to turn a tile into a canal. That worker would be spent in the process, like building airbases in civ3. If you needed to extend the canal further, you send another worker to do the same.

I've been trying to come up with something relativaly easy to do with the SDK, so maybe I'll give this a go. The hard part will be teaching the AI about them.

I LOVE THIS IDEA!! I would do it, but im not a programmer and have no programming experience but i love the idea and it should have been in the original game. Since i started playing Civ (Civ II), I always hated building cities, soo my units can travel between continents faster. I want a Canal mod! Please someone make it. You can do the graphics by scaleing the river graphics and thinning it out makeing it look like a canal

I already was bluepriniting my idea about a Canal Tile Improvement system. :p I'll be sure to post my thoughts after I'm sure my idea is fully balanced (and actually useful).

I am glad to hear that others share my enthuiasm for the idea. I am going to attempt creating a program.

I am going to add a tech which would allow the construction of an engineer unit which would build the canal. The canal would be built "all at once" by telling the engineer the 5-7 squares you would like converted to a canal. Then over the course of the next few turns he will be automated to create the canal. The canal can be used to connect two oceans, or lake to lake.

Also, I was thinking of making the cities connected by a canal as a water city capable of buildings ships.

The only problem is what kind of ships should be allowed?? Any ideas??

Everyship apart from battleships and carriers, they should have to go the long way round. Make sure that squares with canals can not build anything else and only provides 2 food and 1 commerce. That way people wont spam them.

Canalsides tend to be come industrial sites over time. I think it's better to have a hammer/commerce output.
