Countering a Samurai rush

Just out of curiosity, can you harvest strategics like iron and horses (is there a source that shows the yields for doing so?), or build districts over them?
No, and no (if the strategic resource is visible). However, both can be modded.

You can upgrade your units with only one copy of a strategic resource. So build all those Chariots and Warriors, then upgrade! Ideally the turn before your friend reaches your walls.

Oh that's brilliant! Can you do that even without the encampment? Does the upgraded unit contribute to your cities combat strength?

Hmmm, good point. Just out of curiosity, can you harvest strategics like iron and horses (is there a source that shows the yields for doing so?), or build districts over them?

Over strategic resources you can build districts over them but you don't get the yields from them. So with the iron you'll still get the iron but you'll lose the production and science you would have got from it if you improved or worked it if that makes sense.

You can't harvest or build districts over already revealed strategic resources.
However, if a later strategic resource that needs a pre requisite techt to reveal, pops up on a tile where you've already built or planted a district, wonder or a city centre, before you have researched the said tech, you get access to that resource right away.

Sorry, I was unclear. Yes, upgrading requires only one copy of the resource, with or without an encampment, and you can perform the upgrade anywhere within your own borders. Once upgraded, the unit acts just like a hard-built unit, so it contributes to city strength calculations.

Oh wow, that changes everything. I'm kind of gold poor, but I could potentially save some to upgrade a knight. How can i figure out how much it will cost me to upgrade? While I'm at it, how can I figure out how much gold it will cost him to upgrade into Samurai? He's hoarding gold and I'd like to know how many Samurai I could be facing.

That would massively improve my city strength. Then I could produce some crossbows and garrison them behind walls hopefully that's enough.

Does a warmonger penalty actually do anything to human players? If not then why would anyone ever denounce you? Why not surprise war every time?
A surprise war gives you more war weariness. WW could have been a good mechanic but it is badly designed and tends not to be a big deal.
It also affects grievances which will affect captured city loyalty I imagine. Not looked into it enough, just got tired of bad mechanics and my coastal cities getting pillaged by weather to be bothered anymore.
any AI player it will seriously affect trade deals is the main downside.

Some very dedicated people have figured out many of the formulas for the game and shared them here:

The Samurai doesn't upgrade from any previous unit, so you have a materiel advantage. He'll have to pay full price (in production or gold) for every one, while you can build Warriors and upgrade to Swords. Which is actually cheaper than just buying the Swordsmen straight out.

You're a gold mine of information. I was worried because he was hoarding gold like no one's business, but if he has to build them I'll be just fine.

Yeah, but he has gold to buy 1. If they cost as much as a Knight to upgrade he could upgrade 8.
