Crash with no error message

I recently installed vanilla Civilization 4 again, and about twenty minutes into a game, it will either crash to my desktop or freeze with no error message, aside from the usual Windows "Send error report" message. Windows itself does not crash or lock-up. Occasionally it will happen when I am about to start a game instead of during one. I have played Civilization 4 on this computer before with no problems; I don't remember what version of the game I used when it worked properly, but it was before or around when Beyond the Sword was released.

I'm using Civilization IV 1.7.4.0, and my drivers are up to date. Attached is my dxdiag.txt. Thank you.

When I get the error report, it gives me this:
Error signature
AppName: civilization4.exe
AppVer: 1.7.4.0
ModName: civilization4.exe
ModVer: 1.7.4.0
Offset: 000b813d

Then if I click on technical information, it gives me this as well as a really long list of other stuff:
Exception Information
Code: 0xc0000005
Flags: 0x00000000
Record: 0x0000000000000000
Address: 0x00000000004b813d

Do you need anything else?

 I'll just quote what I just wrote in another thread about this - I have seen the dxdiag file: is there a reason why XP is not uptodate? if not, try installing Service Pack 3.

for what its worth: this is a (memory) access violation error - that can occur when there is
- a bad software (the game should be free of these though)
- a bad driver
- some other program in the background trying to interact with the computer
- bad graphics memory
- bad RAM
unfortunately it is a pain to troubleshoot I would try to help - but have to warn you: I will have extremely limited online time through July 20th so interaction might be slow.
That said: are your graphics and sound drivers updated? please post your dxdiag results file as a file attachment here. You can attach files by clicking on go advanced then on manage attachments below the reply box.
