Crashing During Mid-Play

Ok so here's the deal. I just recently purchased Civ 4 off of Steam (thats the Valve owned and operated client) , downloaded it and experienced the exact same thing I did when I bought Warcraft 3 a few years ago. After an estimated 5 minutes of game play (gameplay meaning "Such and such is logged in" and then you start with your settler and warrior and build your city.); the entire system would freeze (the keyboard wouldnt work, the screen would freeze, but the background music would still play) and then the monitor would just go out. The green light on the computer tower would stay on the but the monitor would go to the yellow hibernation light.

Anyway, I downloaded the latest drivers for my Video card, my motherboard, downloaded a program called SpeedFan to see if my tower was overheating, I adjusted my display settings and the game wouldnt even load (and error message would pop up) unless it was at the proper resolution setting (1024X728 or whatever. I fixed that.)

Ive been reading up on what to change and what to fix and everyone and there mother has been giving me the run around.

I would appreciate it if anyone could help me out on this one.

I run Valve's CIV4 on (dual boot) XPx64 and Vista64U and it randomly crashes during play anywhere from 5 minutes to several hours. I suspected Nvidia drivers because of all their problems with 8800GTX sli—however x64 & Vista64U use different drivers. No hints from standard logging but I've turned on advanced(?) logging.

Add'l Note: don't be in a rush to x64 or Vista, I'll probably go back to CIV4 on my 32bit XP—smaller screen but fewer unpleasant surprises.

ive been having the same problem with my version running on steam. Sometimes it freezes and i can't move my mouse or use my keyboard, sometimes it just powers down my computer. I have no ideawhy, but I would love to know.

What hardware/driver/OS?

And there is steam forum too, search lesallstar...

Thank you for the responses guys.

First of all, I think that there is more to the issue or at least one LITTLE tweak that will fix this thing. I just dont know what the hell it is or where to start looking. Maybe if I press enough buttons on my computer the sh*t will work correctly

Ohh and the Steam forums barely get ANY replies from anyone when it comes to tech support on Civ4. I received no responses to my post.

If the thing RUNS for 5 minutes then there HAS to be something that should be tweaked in order to make it run for longer. Isnt that logical?

I decided to try out a game that came with one of the parts of my new 64 bit, so I installed it. It automatically installed Directx9.0c.

After this, CIV4 will still crash, but only after several hours of play.

Cannot explain it but luck seems to be better than tech support.

Let us know if you have similar results.

P.S. Got Event Log Explorer installed on both XP and Vista boots. First crash was nvidia related. It was on Vista using 101.41 beta drivers.
