Hi, I think I'm having a blonde moment right now, but where is the map creator / editor for Civilization 4?

I am thouroghly fed up of the game refusing to allow me to start on my own isolated island, but cant find how to create my own maps from scratch other then editiong ones that the game makes.

Ctrl + W or go into the menu where you save and click on the WorldBuilder option.

stay away from the Worldbuilder option... Once you go in there you'll forever be tempted to go back in there when things turn sour. You have no idea how hard it is to not give youself tanks when a huge army comes rolling into your border or iron or oil when you have none around. Opening Worldbuilder is like opening pandoras box lol

Exactly. I already know about worldbuilder and dont want to use it.

You cant actually create a fresh map in worldbuilder, only edit a new game which defeats the point.

Anyhow, does world builder have a random map generator? I just hate how there isnt a world builder, to the best of my knowledge, that spawns each Civ on its own Island with balanced resources.

I just want my own Island with stone + marble and an industrious Civ and happy me XD

I think it might have a map genrator but you might want to check. I find the second i open worldbuilder it ruins the game for me even if i don't use it and i have to start over on a fresh map

Start a game with High Sea level. Go onto WB with Ctl-W and change every square to ocean. Save it as Blank Map and whenever you want to make a map, just open it and create the island with marble + stone that you wanted and save it under a different name when you're done.

Doing this, you cant change Civs in each map you save right? I also dont think you can randomly generate a map and play around with it either. You have to build everything from scratch.

Each map you make like this is stuck with the same Civs you choose when you first start the game. There should be a full map editor outside the game like there is for Civ 2 and 3, but there isnt one.

Too right :(. BTW why do you want to start isolated? Half the fun of the early game is beating the AI to the resources. With an isolated start there is nothing to do for an aeon or two and your military goes to pot as a result. Nothing like close competition to generate a bit of creativity and excitement. If you start on an island you end up like Britain is today after 1000 years with no successful invasions, and you don't want that, trust me. It is like the Decline and Fall all over again at the moment, and even then the Romans had the excuse of lead piping whereas Health and Safety in our case got rid of that years ago.

In the case that you are stating, try going for an Archipelago map and see whether that helps.

You could also try Custom Continents with one continent per civ. Make sure sea levels are high though or else you might be able to contact other civs.

Not if the game that you started originally had every civ in it. You don't necessarily have to use every civ in your new map, just don't give them any units or cities or anything.

First of all, I totally agree that Civ IV should have a straightforward map editor like Civs II & III did. I despise random maps; I always create my own to play on - I have since Civ II - and having to do it through WorldBuilder is something of a hassle. It's my only real complaint about Civ IV. I just can't imagine what Sid and his design team were thinking when they decided to go the WB route.

That said, it is entirely possible to create fun maps with WB. Here's what I do:

1) Set up a game as normal, using whatever parameters you prefer (I usually do Terra, large map, epic length, temperate, normal sea level). If you care about which opponents you have, select them as well.

2) Enter WorldBuilder as soon as the game starts. Do not take even a single turn. Choose "change all plots to ocean"; this will remove all players and land from the map. You will have to erase some coastline tiles and ocean resources by hand, but this is easy using the 6x6 brush.

3) Cycle through each player and unreveal the entire map. If you don't do this, their original starting position will still be revealed to them no matter where you eventually put them on the map.

4) Create continents and islands as you like. I find that doing a rough sketch on paper beforehand helps a lot.

5) Distribute resources. Be careful to balance resources and land so that each player has a roughly equal start. I guess you could give yourself some advantages, but I advise against it. It's just no fun to "win" a game where all the oil and uranium was on your home continent. If there is some benefit that you really want (e.g., definately having stone and marble), I suggest giving the other civs some small advantage to compensate. Maybe a few extra resources or something.

6) Place the players on the map. Remember that civs who start with hunting get a settler and a scout, while everyone else gets a settler and a warrior.

7) Enjoy!

Doing this for a large map takes me six to eight hours, depending on how meticulous I want to be (even when I'm being lazy my attention to detail is damn near neurotic). And I recommend breaking that up over several evenings unless you like eyeball headaches. ;)

As I said earlier, I absolutely agree that Civ IV should have a Civ III-style map editor. But since it doesn't, the above method, though somewhat painstaking, allows me to fully enjoy the game. It does have one significant drawback, which others have already mentioned: You can't change the civs in the game. But hey, no solution is perfect.

Oh, and if you want a game with an industrious civ, stone & marble, isolated start, I have a WBS that meets those specs. I can PM it to you if you like.

You use the World Builder. For a tutorial on how to do it, go here:

(note that this is where to find the tutorial, not a link to it)

This is great advice! Balancing resources is very important in my point of view also. There is very little sense of accomplishment when you win a game because you gave yourself a resource advantage.

Hi all!

I need a little help. I'm really not familiar in modding and I have now difficulties in a simple thing. (so I think it is simple)

I would like to make a scenario in a giant earth map, plus add a custom civilization to it. My plan was to load a mod with the custom civ (I have the mod). Then start a scenario in a giant earth map and make historical starting locations with world builder.

It's good idea, or is there better way? And if it can be done, where can I find that kind of earth map, but just the map without starting locations, so not a mod. I have checked in downloads but I did not really find one just mods.

Please, help! Thanks!
