Creating Flags

Hi, I'm trying to create a flag for a mod I'm creating. I'm only using GIMP and the dds converter, everything seems fine, however I keep getting a '-' hyphen instead of a yes in the alpha channel section. I've read all the posts concerning this but I still can't seem to get it. Can someone help me by making a list of things I should do? thanks.

Scroll up the page and go into the Tutorials Forum... in there is a tutorial on Creating New Civilizations. The first steps it guides you through are flag creation
