The civilization 4 game is beeing praced in most of the game community, but as a old civ 3 gamer and new game developer I would like to express my critisism towards civ4 and atari game communitiy. It will be against the game graphic development as it seems that graphics and interface design is the bigger part of the development of civ4. where are you Sid with your greate choises? if you were involved in the game you should be ashamed of your self. I played it and got bored about 15 turns into the game as it seemed like it was a easy life. It did not give me the choisable aspects as civ 3 and before has given me all along. Well there is place for a civ 5, but itshould not be on the cost of the fans. Because the fans of civ3 will not be happy about the game at all. what happened to the vikings and the other nations of civ3? You didnt make a game to reflect civilization but rather a commerical enterprice. what happened to the other civs influencing the world. After playing Rome total war, I laugh at the grafically enriched maps and game areas. I am a game developer myself, and I ask... Did you ask the fans of civ3? who were the fans of civ3. Well you have for sure lost one of the fans of civ4. Atari still reflects arcade games and not civilization who until now had a great reputation. Well. If you cannot read what civ players want I just have to make the game myself. And if you throw the copyright card on me, ill just say. Well we are all reflective humans and we do not get threatend by emty threats. you know the feelign right and sleep well at nigth? You amed far from the right spot this time. !

There is little to really blame in the graphic design choice (other than some aesthetic choices like the icons, or the city map which could be better IMO) - there is nothing wrong with having a 3-d game interface that can zoom and has cool effects.

It's all about EXECUTION. And my experience has led me to believe the execution was poor.

I would agree that if all they did was slap a new engine on Civ3, it'd be pointless. But there really are numerous changes that I think really make it an overall better game than Civ3. Sure, I'd have made some different choices (the way bombardment works, etc) but they have clearly remade the game and added to the experience in my mind.

If the patch makes this game play like it should on a high end machine, I will give it an unqualified thumbs up (once I mod the hell out of it of course!).

Well gee, this is so strange but I do believe that FEAR has much better graphics than, even, RTW. That is so weird like how they have graphics that are totally different.

I wonder why... duh.

I also like how yallaballa never really says what's wrong with CIV. Oh well.

*addendum: Oh yeah, Civ3 fans? Who cares, frankly. IMO, the vast majority of civilization fans consider Civ3 to be an abomination.

After reading that I have no idea what the criticism is. For example, what the hell does this mean:

Does that mean after 15 turns you decided the game was easy and got bored? Do you do book reviews based on the first seven pages too, or movie reviews based on the opening credits?

That's all it had, the rest of the game suked. I'll take a game like CIV IV any day over a game like RTW. The strategy AI was piss poor and the tactical battle AI was piss poor and the diplomatic AI was totally piss poor. Screw graphics if you can't put a decent challenging game behind it. I'll stick with SID everytime on a game like CIV IV.

Oh and as far as CIV III? I liked it except the AI wasn't very aggressive. This CIV IV AI reminds me a lot of the AI in CIV I & II while bringing the trade/diplomacy system of CIV III to it and adding this new Religion and Heroic Peoples is pretty neat also. I never lost a game of CIV III Monarchy, I can't win a game Prince/Monarchy with CIV IV yet. That's quality gaming at it's finest when a game is that challenging in those levels.

Civ 4's graphics were a step backwards, civ 3's were much better. Thats the sad truth. I was exited about the graphics too before I saw how bad it really was. You people need to stop denying the problem, just because you are civ fans deosn't mean you shouldn't accept the truth.

You might want to learn English before intentionally violating the copyright of an American company. Just a thought.

I actually quite like what they've done with this one. The only thing that has given me pause is that the early game is now longer (good) but the late game is now way shorter. I'm sure they'll be some mods to change the time scale though. Personally I loved Civ until Civ3 came along but now all the magic is back.

Uh, I strongly disagree that R:TW had better graphics! I tried so hard to love that game, but neither its visuals nor its gameplay appealed to me. Civ4, on the other hand, turned me into a sad addict within the first few hours. I also believe the problem became clear when you said "as a old civ 3 gamer". Civ4 is not a pepped up Civ3, it's a sequel in its own right. I never liked Civ3 much, but I do love Civ4. It had been a while since my last Civ additction (Civ1), so I wasn't bogged down with comparisons or expectations. Civ4 isn't perfect, but it's the best strategy game I've played in years. I'm one of those jaded, old and cynical gamers, and it takes a lot these days to actually make me lose sleep. Civ4 did it, and that alone tells me that it's a fantastic game. That's entirely subjective, of course.

I thought Civ 1 was brilliant.

Then I thought Civ 2 was even more brilliant.

Then Civ 3 was even more brilliant still.

I am in Hong Kong and haven't seen a (non-pirated) copy of Civ 4 for sale yet. But when a legit Civ 4 hits the shelves, I will be the first buyer in this former Crown Colony. On the basis of most things I've read in these forums, I expect I will find Civ 4 to be amazingly brilliant.

Then when Civ 5 eventually comes along ..........

This is simply the greatest game series ever.
