Cross-Ocean Invasion Tips on Multiplayer?

Hey folks, I could use some advice.

I have a game going with a group of friends where my buddy playing the Iroquois was left to his own devices (got a continent to himself) and began massively wonderspamming. He's 300 points ahead of me in gamescore (and a very slight tech lead that I'm working furiously to close)...I'm the closest in power to him by far. He's running a tall, production empire of about 4-5 cities and has taken up his whole continent except a citystate to the south.

He knows me, and has predicted an invasion is coming. I'm Japan, it's gotten to the very early modern era and he has destroyers monitoring his coast and several Artilery units wandering around (and one in each city). If I don't invade, no one else in the game has a chance. But the way Civ5 is set up, cross-ocean invasions are exceedingly difficult, especially on a human player who knows one should be coming.

Any suggestions on successful cross-ocean invasion strategies? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Very much depends on the amount of firepower you can bring to bear and, more importantly, how much you can spare for a diversion. Ideally, you would have enough to send a small, but powerful force to one part of the continent. However, Destroyers are nasty weapons against embarked units so before you can win any war, you'll have to build up a large fleet.

If your friends could do the feint attack instead, then you could dedicate your entire force to a landing. The key part will be taking the first city as quickly as possible to use as a bomber/missile base once you get them. Otherwise, wait until you get atomic bombs?

Screenshots would help though.

I would say yoru only hope is a combined assault with at least one other player. Likely that other player would be devoted entierly to naval support, and as Sonereal has said should proceed with a feint attack in hopes of distracting most or all of the Iroquois fleet a few turns in advance, then you would attempt to land on another side of the island.

The city state may also be important. If you can ally with them it could become a safe (well maybe safer is the better term) landing point. However I imagine your friend would know this is about to happen the very turn he gets a notification saying you allied with that city state. Best of luck

What Mishi said is correct, he will have at least one coastal city, probably more (as proven by his warships). If you can gain the advantage on the water, ships reduce coastal cities very quickly through bombardment. Then any land unit can take it from the water in 1 shot (even a darn scout).

If you are able to gain control of the water and say just 2 of his 5 cities are coastal, you'll give him a strong hit to production, gold, and research lost from those cities (and possibly some wonders to boot).

If HE is reading this post though, dude you clearly have the upper hand, go crush these conspirators before they team up on you!!! HAHA

He does have a strong land army that includes Artillery, however. If I don't bring in some land units, he'll easily retake the city. Maybe a balanced approach is best.

You dont care if hé takes it back. Just weaking him with pure naval strat. Once you weaken him taking all his coastal cities, you Will see clearer.

I mean play with these 2 in general :) One of the main problems in conquest victory is overseas invasion. The berserker and mandekalu cavalry are great medieval units. They help you take out all players on your continent before you embark for an overseas invasion. Consider playing as these next multiplayer game you play.

Only one person can win the game. Explain this to the other players. Set a landing zone for each of them and a turn to land.

Then make sure you land 3 turns after they do......

Unless they are real friends that you might play with in the future... in which case land right when and where you said you would and remember who lied like a dog just to win one stupid game of Civ that one time.
