Cross the Ocean Pre-Optics...how?

Had you been playing the Warlords expansion, your Trireme WOULD have been able to safely travel through Vicky's Cultural across the Ocean.

That change in BtS was a rather dubious one in my eyes. Apparently, the winds and storms of the oceans DO differentiate between the colours of the flag that a boat choses to fly... if the flag doesn't match the colour of the Culture, then "no passage for you!"

Good point. But doesnt have this something to do say with countries like Portugal who historicaly has no room to expand so they had natural inclination (or were forced to) for exploration of the dangerous seas?

I liked how in civ2 you could risk travelling the ocean but there was a probability of being lost at sea. I suppose the downside is that it is open to reloading abuse.
