CTP1 Difficulty Question

What difficulty level should I set the game at so the AI can actually keep up with me better? Because honnestly it sucks being 10+ techs ahead of EVERYONE by the time I reach republic... so far I'm playing on difficulty level 5.. any suggestions please post them here

Deity, depending on terrain, can and will wear you down.

Emperor is the last one that's fairly easy to beat. Diety is pretty tough(though you can probably still win). One thing you could do is save, and use the cheat option at start. Show the whole map and see if you're in a fairly bad location. If so, load the game and play!
If you're in an awesome paradise, go remake a new world.
