What is a culture bomb? How does it work? I am playing Jadwiga and want to take advantage of her ability. Do I need to build the encampment adjacent to the square I want to take? Give me as much detail as pososible.

Yes.

I almost never purposely use culture bombs, so I may miss some info. Basically it will extend the cultural boundaries 1 tile in all directions from the tile you build the encampment in. It will actually push back opposing ai and city state cultural boundaries, but I believe there are exceptions like if they have a wonder or district on those tiles.

So yes, build the encampment next to the tiles you want to take. Other civs like Khmer and Netherlands also get culture bombs by building holy site and harbors respectively. You can also take a religious belief to allow holy sites to culture bomb when playing any civ. There might be one other civ with a culture bomb ability, I can't remember.

John Curtin has a culture bomb when he builds pastures.
Poundmaker's trade routes expand your borders as well.

edit: The burial grounds religious belief allows you to culture bomb on completion of a holy site as well

like Disgustipated siad you won't get tiles with wonders or districts on them
any unique improvements on the tiles you get will disappear but you'll keep other improvements

You can, however, take a tile on which someone is building but has not completed a wonder - a sneaky tactic that is rewarded with a steam achievement, if memory serves.

Keep in mind that you can't claim tiles more than three tiles away from a city centre.

Remember that (at least with Jadwiga) you only get tiles out to the citty's 3rd ring. It won't give you a tile that city can't work.

Jadwiga also gets to culture bomb with forts as well as encampments which makes her culture bomb the most flexible.

True, but that doesn't come until Military Engineering. If you took Crusades as a religious belief you can convert a city with a fort right before you attack. Getting there is slow but it IS fun to use.

Adding to this: it is possible to culture bomb a tile that is adjacent to an enemy city center if it is within 3 tiles of your city. If at any point that city becomes yours, however, the tile will switch back to the original city and not be able to be swapped (like all tiles adjacent to your city centers).

Also there is a Great Engineer that will allow you to culture bomb with Industrial Zones (Mimar Sinan?) which I've frequently gotten but almost never found to be useful for actually stealing tiles.
