The SG I generated this for won't be using it. We're using this map instead..

In any case, I am thinking about playing out that first map on my own, and am wondering how people would play that. I really would rather not settle on flood plains thanks to disesase. Also, the lack of shields is a concern.

If anyone wants the save, the SG thread is here:

It's #2.

Flood plains are you're best friend, that's an awesome start. With all that food disease won't be too huge a problem unless you're very unlucky. Beautiful rivers, fertile Wheat and herds of fat, delicious cows. It also looks like there's some forests on the edge. You'll be able to get two four-turn pumps up very quickly and easily, IMO. I may need to go HoF on this mother.

EDIT America, too?!?! This game is over before it starts.

Would you move one square to the south east and settle on the plains or settle in place?

Where would you move the scout and what tile would you improve first?

If it weren't for the Wheat, yes, that's what I would do. As it is, I settle on the spot and move the Worker NW, irrigating/roading. Then to the cow for the same. You now have 5 fpt and it's probably ~3500BC. You will quickly ascend to a city size where you will be able to churn out Settler every four turns with a Granary. I would build one Settler before the Granary, and would chop a forest whilst the Granary is in production.

I haven't looked at the save and thus can only really see nine squares, but I'd be surprised if there isn't. With the Wheat and Cow irrigated, Washington (presumably) is producing 6fpt and 3spt. This not only allows the usual "bonus" production, but also allows one forest to be worked in addition. You will thus need two forests; if they're not available then mine a couple Plains. With thought, that is definitely enough shields.

Just working the irrigated the wheat flood plains is enough for 5 FPT (I'm sure you know this but you said 5 in this post which may confuse some people).

There's definitely enough shields here, even without mined plains. You could set it up just from what we can see now:

Irrigated wheat gives 5 FPT and 1 SPT
Cow gives 6 FPT and 3 SPT
Mined bonus grass gives 6 FPT and 5 SPT
Forest gives 5 FPT and 7 SPT
Irrigated plains gives 5 FPT and 8 SPT

This still leaves another forest and a boatload of plains.
Could also get a 2-turn Worker Pump up with the rest of those flood plains.

I started playing this map on my own last night. A plains sugar comes under Washington's control after the initial culture expansion(with another just to the south of it). So, my opening worker moves were:

1. road and irrigate the flood plain wheat
2. road and mine the BG
3. road and irrigate the cow
4. road and irrigate a plain(this was because the sugar was 2 squares away from Washington, so I wanted to keep things connected)
5 road and mine the sugar

I built 2 scouts, then the granary in my first try, but I think I want to build a settler before the granary when I restart (got too behind in techs .. this is my first Emperor attempt). This way, that new city can get to the point of providing escorts for my settlers, and I only have to worry about producing settlers every 4 turns from Washington.
