Everytime I try to change my avatar to a custom avatar it says, "The uploaded file is not a valid JPG or GIF file blah blah blah." The images I am trying to use I found over the Google Image Search and I copied them to my paint program, edited them a little and made sure they were 65 by 65 pix or smaller, but it still wouldn't accept them because they "are not vaild JPG or GIF files." Am I doing something wrong, because this is making me very mad.

Are you saving the pictures as JPEG files? Also they may be too big, size wise.

I think it means your chosen avatar is not a gif or jpeg file. Check if its extension ends in a .gif or .jpg. Otherwise you shld resave it as such, using some converter or something. ;)

Which paint programme are you using?

What format is it in?? You have not answered tha question yet...also if you don't know then post the picture.

It sounds like the picture is in the .bmp format if you are using Paint.

Maybe I can help.

If you're using just Paint, whenever you save something it will/should automatically be a bitmap. You don't want that.

Next time you make/edit this image, when you save it, look under where you name it. There should be a drop down box for "save file type" or something like that. At the drop down menu and look for Graphics Interchange Format (.gif). That's what you will need to save it as. But be warned- it may cause some loss of color.

BTW, just so you don't get mad. There is no file type option in win 98.

Click here to go to the download page of a great image type converter that is small and free!

Visit the link above and click painter 23. All you have to do is decrease the size of the white area in paint by clicking the little blue boxes and dragging them closer in and then you can save the file as .bmp and load it in the new prog and save as a .jgp or a .gif or several other formats.

I highly recommend this program for simplicity and size.

If you are using a OS better than 98 you should have the option to save as a .gif.

There isn't? But I'm using Win98 and the Paint does give me an option to save as another format, other than bmp. Strange....

Oh boy, I don't have it!

STARLIFTER!! We need you, perhaps you could clarify something on this mystery since I swear I do not have the save as another format option, just to save as a few dif. types of .bmp files.

Some versions of Paint are .BMP only. Mine is (Win 95, OSR 2.1).

I never ever use paint, though. Go to download.com and get a free program, or check the freeware thread in this Forum, to find some other alternatives.

Remember, .BMP is a simple 8-bit color file, which means you get 2^8=256 colors, just like a GIF. If you are editin in True Color (3 byte, one for Red, Green, and Blue, or 3*8=24 bit color, or 2^24=16.7 million clolors), then what Becka said will apply to BMPs, too (losing color when saving as GIF).

A good shareware program I've used since last century is ACDC, or ACDSee. I think someone posted another good one called IrfanView, in the Freeware thread, though I don't use Irfanview much anymore (but it is still good!).

Gonzo has a good option for file-only conversion.

In summary, ditch MS Paint. You want something better, preferable with basics like transparancy.

:)
