I think that civ 4 should offer you the opportunity to create your own units based on the current technology that you have.

For example, lets say that I have the technology for gun infantry(repeating fire). You could choose their Weapon, its statistics within its category on a scale of 5, such as an smg with 5 rate of fire, 2 damage, and 3 range. Also, you would be able to choose if/ and what kind of explosives or inherent anti-vehicle weapons they would have, plus maybe the percentage of the units armed in whichever fashion. The stats and weapon type and amount of explosives would affect the price/ production time of the unit, as well as its effectiveness against tanks.

As I've said before to hell with Civ IV gimme' SMAC II!

uhhh. IMO if you could do that then you could overpower you units into "1 man war enders." But, it could have a Sims kind of thing where you have a certain amount of points you could put to use like say 15 and that would go for movement, attack strengh(sp?), denfense, range, and any other stats there are.Other then that it is a good idea.

This isnt necessarily true, because the lower the quality of the unit, the faster, and thus, the more of them you can build.

Dante, You are confusing his suggestion with what would be included in an editor. The editor would have all power to make any unit desired. A unit creation tool in the game would give limits as far abilities and would give appropriate costs for those abilities.

Yes, not a bad idea. I wouldn't like it done to the extent of SMAC though(though I liked the game, it was appropriate there, but not as much for civ IMO and with unpredictable results in various areas, plus it doesn't really work like that in most human history). I wouldn't like a tremendous leap in Civ4, generally. Just fix what's wrong with civ3 and keep versions of the rest(and have graphics for units that are at least close to whar civ3 has, not ugly polygon looking ones).

Custom unit workshops make CIV players salivate...
But with a set roster of 3D made units, it is unlikely.

It means they would have to model/render/program tons of variants of the 50 or so units that will come with CIV4...

:)

I agree with flamescreen, I would like to see things wrong in civ3 fixed, but I still like my sequels to have some new qualities about them. I have never played "SMAC" but I have played Earth 2150, which gave me the idea. I don't want to be able to soup up units to the point of infinity, I just want each option on each unit to have its own purpose, not have one better than the other. It would promote unit diversity.

I would also not want the graphics to change much in civ4 because I have a really soft spot for gamers who have bad PC's, because I am one...

I think it would be fun to make up your own units, maybe with custom graphics of your choice. :goodjob:
