Started a new game this weekend, and as I worked my way through the start-up (random vs. pre-made map, raging hordes, man or woman, etc., etc.), I realize that I have fallen into a rut: I always customize the rules a little.

I rarely touch most of the boxes, but I ALWAYS pick my own opponents, eschewing the random assignments.

Got me wondering: how do you customize your games? Do you simply go with the standard rules, tinker a bit on the edges like me or do you delve into the rules and really modify the hell out of your games?

I usually customize my maps when I begin a new game. I think I allways use the middle option except for age of the world, which I choose to be 5 billion years. Other than that I allways use standard rules and random opponents. In the gamefiles I've changed the language, but no rules. It's easier to compare myself with other games if the rules are the same.:)

I almost always customize. I chose different land size (normal or large) depending on mood. Normal Climate, but wet weather (to get more terrain that can be changed to grasslands before explosives.)

Random opponents, male leader and raging hordes. Standard rules.

Other than setting to no ai re-spawn and setting barbarian level I go random

What is the benefit of setting the age of the world at 5 billion? Just wondering.

At 5 billion years a good percentage of the mountains (the grey ones) are replaced by hills (the green ones).

Yep I nearly always customiSe, usually large map and land mass, then archipelago/varied/continents according to my mood. I don't bother choosing my opponents. I also always go wet, for the same reason as Jace :goodjob:

I frequently customize as much as possible, and even go for accelerated start up to give the AI a better chance; mainly scenarios, though. I'm jaded. :D

I always turn spaceships off and eliminate restarting once a civilization has been destroyed.

I see that a lot of people pick the opponents. I'm gonna start a new tread about why and who.

Just FYI

The younger the world is, the more rough edges it has, so to speak. The ice and tectonic plates haven't had time to bunch all the mountains together in bunches and grind them into hills.

Choosing a 3 billion year old world will mean more mountains, that are scattered all over the place. A 5 billion year world is more likely to have long mountain ranges.

I ususally customize the map a little -- 5B age for a more varied terrain, large land mass (more cities), wet (easier path to grass).

Occaisionally I'll pick opponents, but nowadays, I don't much care.

I go through all the usually customisation of the map / world , number of civs, restarts, No SS etc, but I also regularly edit the rules.txt, add extra techs and units, change the defence value on tanks because it is unrealistic, alter the food/shield/trade values on terrain and specials, reduce the terrain tranform multiplier....

Have fun but make sure you reset to a backup rules.txt before playing your next GOTM. Or have a second installation in a different directory for customisation.
