Me and a friend currently have a 2 player CIV 6 „League“ that is a lot of fun.
We are both not regular multiplayer players but enjoy the competition just between us with some friendly banter. We have some custom rules and invented some competitions, that I want to share with you guys.
We are currently not looking for other players, the system works fine for us. I just want to introduce you to our rules, and maybe some of you will want to use them and our socreboard to play with a friend. Additionaly we are really open for some feedback if you find any flaws in our system or have some ideas. Maybe someday in the future we might want to expand our „League“, to more than two players ;-).
During the course of a season we both are participating in 4 competitions. There is the „Championship“, the bread and butter of a season and probably the most honest and treasured title.
Furthermore we play the „Cup“, which is a more open and random competition to try things out and refresh everything a bit. Then there ist he „SuperCup“ the one cup to rule them all.
And of course the „World Cup“, where we invite a guest to play with us.
Every Competition has its own draft rules and point system.
I am going to start with the „Championship“.
The Championship is played for 20 games of which the games 18-20 are the „Playoffs“. Every Championship game is played with Standard game rules on a small pangea map with us 2 human players and 5 AI civs. At the beginning of a Championship Game the Civdrafter provides us with 5 Leader choices, the player who lost the previous game or the previous season gets the first pick. You are only allowed to play a leader 3 times during the course of the Championship, and you can not play a leader two times in a row. If a civ that is not eligeable by a player is drafted, one additional leader is drafted, who is then available for both players. The best AI from the previous game gets a wildcard to the game and can therefore not be picked from a player.
Point system: We play until one of us declares defeat. You can declare defeat any time in the game, the winner gets awarded the following points depending on the round of the game he achieved the victory in.
Round 1-29 = 3 Points
Round 30-49 = 5 Points
Round 50-99 = 10 Points
Round 100-109 = 11 Points
Round 110-119 = 12 Points and so on.
If an AI wins a game, which never happens, it is a tie. 0:0.
Short excours why we do it like this: We both dont have a lot of free time and we dont want to play civ-games we dont enjoy just for the sake of finishing the game. There are games where you just know after 25 rounds that its pretty impossible to win them. When you play with 2 players you dont get the feeling you need to stay in the game just to not be a quitter and let the other players down. That is why we enjoy these duells so much, we have a good mix of games, some a done after 20 rounds some last for 120 but you never have the feeling that you have to ride a dead horse and waste your time.
So far this system has worked really well for us. With round 18 the playoffs start, now things get exiciting. For the 3 playoff games there will at least be 10 points awarded for the winner no matter the round in which he wins the game. The winner of the regular season (until game 18) gets first pick in all the playoff games.
Example: In our first season the score of the regular season is 70 – 58. Therefore my friend needs to win only one of the 3 remaining playoff games. A player is declared champion when there is no possibility that he can loose his lead, the remaining games will not be played.
The „Cup“. We play cup games from time to time to spice things up and try new game modes or maps. It is a simple best of seven competition. Before the game we decide on a game mode and a map. Afterwards everyone of us gets to pick 5 leaders for a leader-pool of 10. Our leaders and the AI leaders are drawn from this pool. You therefore dont know who you play until the start of the game and dont know who you friend plays until his Civ and his diplo screen shows up.
We have played games like „Archipelago / Monopolies“ with only naval civs in the pool. Or „Heroes of Europe“ with Heroes mode and only European civs (original capital on the european continent) on an inland sea map.
It is just about trying new things and cup games are a lot of fun.
„Supercup“Just one last game to finish a season with a bang and claim one last piece of silverware. Its a random map with random leaders but the current champion can „blacklist“ 5 civs and exclude them from the game before the match and the Cup-winner can blacklist 3. If someone won the double (Championship & Cup) he is allowed to blacklist 7 and the second player only one.
„World Cup“Can be played anytime and is a way for us to invite a friend to one of our matches. Our guest gets first pick from 7 drafted civs, and current league leader gets the second pick. Pangaea map on standard settings. One game to win the World-Cup.
So far we really enjoy our competitions, rules and point system. If you have feedback feel free to share, maybe we can add some things or change stuff.
