Damn Firaxis, we should make our own Civ !

Ever heard of Freeciv?
http://www.freeciv.org/

"Freeciv is a multiplayer strategy game, released under the GNU General Public License.
It is generally comparable with Civilization II®, published by Microprose®."

Alas, you need a commercial X-server ...

No, No and NO!!

You can even run a server on Windows. I did that. It depends on the version you downloaded. Since it's open source, there're so many guys who modified it. But I've got several versions and one of them has a built-in server that can run under Windows. 98 or 2k. I didn't download this one on the original website though. Don't remember where. If you're interested, PM me or better, drop me an email, it's faster. I can hardly access CFC these days (connection problems)

with all the ideas i have my version of civ would become something along the lines of Simcity 3000, sudden strike, europa universalis, ctp, civ2, age of empires 2, pharaoh and cleopatra, zues, and ceasar 3. and it would be some kind of real time strategy/city building/simulator/empire builder/historical game that only i and a few others could appreciate and enjoy. well if i made that game i would alway be on the computer.hehe. well that will never happen. i focus mainly on the politics of the game.

Perhaps the *free* X-Server I used was antiquated, but the Windows port simply wouldn't run. Emailing them didn't provide much help.

Either way - the game looks IDENTICAL to Civ II (with worse graphics, even though they just added an isometric view), with the exception of a very complicated impossible-to-use prompt used by a small, dedicated constituency that speaks their jargon. Sorry, I'm simply NOT interested.

How annoying, had to register, probably wont stick arround here too. civ3 isnt interesting me as I'd be forced to install windows to play it. If/When a linux port is annouced I'd be first in line, until then though its CTP

So, you dont like one thing about freeciv, so instead of extending it, building on other peoples work, and doing the much easier task of making a nicer interface, you think it would be better to make the interface, and the rest of the game?

I'm simply not going to purchase a commericial X-Server or spend another hour tinkering with my existing one or the FreeCiv prompt in order to play a civ-clone. I didn't mention forcing a nice interface before the game concept/design was completed; I simply stated that until a full windows port is made for laymen like myself (and the game appears worthy to download), I am not interested.

Many people have said, LET US MAKE OUR OWN CIV, and as many have tried, and many more will speak a deep word on the creation of the way CIV should be made a reality in their own minds. I'm here to tell you FRAXIS is your friend. They have the money and manpower to finish this Daunting task of making a New CIV.

I have a strong feeling that this game will be as much a wonder of the world as the wonders it oft inspires in it's subject. Here is place for all of you to lay down your ideas, they are cataloged and held in safe keeping here. And your words on these threads may be the only real contribution you make to CIV. So I implore you to say good things about FRIXAS

They are HARD at work!

I don't like this thread, and here is why:

We should try to attract Dan Magaha and any other Firaxis people that want to come here and post.

Negative posts towards Firaxis such as this will just drive them away.

They are doing a great job

and if they see this thread, they might just say that "those guys don't know s**t. I'm not going to tell them anything."

I don't entirely agree. What will drive them away is childish behaviour, and there's far too much of that on other forums. Firaxis will not be attracted by sycophancy. I certainly wouldn't. So while there is constructive debate, I'll keep this thread open. If the debate dies, so will the thread - trust me on that one.

But on the other hand, they should be reading the criticisms just as they read the praise. Knowing what people hate about your product can actually be a little more incitefull than knowing what people love so long as it's not comments like: "Your product is stupid period." I for one am not all praise for Firaxis. I like what I've seen but there are somethings I'm very worried about. Firaxis should be listening to that too.

The guy who started this post has never posted before or since. I don't see how we can consider his criticism to "belong" here.

Let's face it. This thread is a loner.
eek.gif
Are we gonna let first time or occasional viewers who may or may not be able to give is real information on the game be dissuaded by the title of this thread?

After reading just the thread title they may not even bother reading what it says if they think that we are babbling idiots like those guys at UGO.
psycho-eyes.gif
They might just decide to leave the forum to go somewhere where there is intelligent life!

Even a simple sentence can be a suitable catalyst for discussion, BP.

I will, however, admit that the discussion in this particular thread is quite flaky and has that SPAM smell. But I'll leave it open if someone actually can continue this discussion.
