one thing i hate is getting sucked into mpps and then having to go to war just because your partner has. i've been holding out of them, and just negotiationg rops and that seems to work. but the reverse is also true: i'm always getting ganged up on because of other nations' mpps. So here's the question: if i am attacked by a nation that has an mpp with another nation, at what point does the mpp kick in? is it first combat (i.e., he attacks my city and my defenders simply stay put) or is it first combat INITIATED BY ME? (after his attack, I counter-attack).
 
Mutual protection pacts are a Civ 3 feature and should not be posted about in the Civ 2 discussions folder...
 
I think you are talking about Civ3...

MPP kicks in whenever you attack one of the AIs units. If you never attack - just let him die trying to kill you - the mpp will not bring others into the war. However, this is usually not going to be a good way to wage war...
