Dan Quayle

Dan Quayle was the first one to admit he did not do very well in front of cameras, unlike those who could point there finger at you & lie without missing a beat. ( i am not talking about GW ) :)

Dan is the best

"The other day, [the President] said, 'I know you've had some rough times, and I want to do something that will show the nation what faith that I have in you, in your maturity and sense of responsibility... would you like a puppy?'"

Dan Quayle lowered American expectations so that ol' GW looks like Einstein

My first game was a diplo victory in settler - Dan Quayle
My second a cultural victory in warlord - Dan Quayle
My third a conquest victory by praetorian rush in noble - Julius Caesar

I do find this quote a little out-of-place in a "misstatements" catalogue:

Dan Quayle said:
When I have been asked during these last weeks who caused the riots and the killing in L.A., my answer has been direct and simple: Who is to blame for the riots? The rioters are to blame. Who is to blame for the killings? The killers are to blame.

It actually makes perfect sense. It's clear to me that he's pointing out that blaming politicians for every dollar of damage in a period of civil chaos is nonsensical: It's the fault of the people who maliciously committed the crime.

Mewtarthio, my objections to this particular Quayle statement are that it's completely superficial -- it looks no deeper than the very surface -- and it offers zero insight toward finding solutions. It's on a par with Calvin Coolidge's famous observation that "When many people are out of work, unemployment results." Factual but unhelpful. I think that's why it gets ridiculed.

If not for the fact that he is also a politician, the quotes might have tricked me into believing that this guy is some kind of semi-zen/existentialist hybrid philosopher-genius.

A lot of these Dan Quayle quotes remind me of some of the George Bush Junior's quotes I have herd.

Occasionally I do find the "stupid" quotes to be rather more insightful than the credit theyre given, like the riots quote above is a commentary that when all the media focus completely on blaming politicians, it conveys the impression that rioting and killing was a natural, acceptable reaction - we should not forget that error or fault of politicians does not in any way diminish the responsibility of the individuals for what they have done.

Yeah, sometimes I think the blatantly obvious needs to be said, so as to remind people of it. In a complex society we forget the obvious and instead look elsewhere.
