To make this a decent unit it should at least have the same strength of a swordsman. Hell the first 20% attack promotion only makes it on par with it's equal (and is still restricted to specific targets, ie, city, melee, etc.). Yea, not needing Iron is a nice and tactically interesting bonus, but not at the cost of strength. I'd rather have a swordsman and need iron.

No, they don't. You are using them wrong. The key to using them is take advantage of the fact that you need no resources. Start your game by building a barracks and research straight for Iron Working. Build Jags and only Jags the second you can. As soon as you can get a stack of 10 jags take over the nearest AI empire or two. They won't be ready as they'll be doing things like hooked up resources and building and improving cities. You will be building units. Period. This works like a charm.

Here's a thought - why not not play as the Aztecs then?
In certain situations you'll notice the jungle bonus, but the main advantage Jags have is that you can build lots of them quickly - even if you've got access to iron you don't need to wait for it to be connected.

It's not an issue of my playing them so much as game balance.

Warp- good point.

Someone in another thread made mention that maybe the Jaguar warrior was supposed to be an axeman replacement. This holds true as a possibility as there IS no axeman replacement.

I'm not sure how a resourceless unit with those gifts would fare at Bronze (and LOSING the axeman would be more devestating then the gains) but it would be interesting to see if you could simply overwhelm.

However - in light of our Seemingly Benign friends comment - I may load them up and give them a try with that focus in mind. Of course, I fear that my enemy MAY have Bronze Working and get Axemen up to counter me in time. But we'll see.

mgd makes a good point about game balance - compare the Offensive dominance of the Praetorian or Conquistador or the game altering defense of the Skirmisher and then weigh in the Jaguar warrior. It is a pretty 'niche' unit with a pitifully short window of opportunity, IMHO.

The Jaguar warrior is a rush unit, plain and simple. The value of it is that you can build a city out in the middle of nowhere with no workers, no roads, and no iron, but still pump out jaguars.
