Datalinks?

I'm a new player to SMAC and have a question.
Probe teams can "infiltrate datalinks" and the Empathy Guild secret project gets you access to all enemies datalinks.
Can someone kindly tell me what this actually means in game terms? What info do I get and how do I access it in game controls? Thanks!

Welcome to the Alpha Centauri forum.

After infiltrating a faction, you can see their Research (F2), Economy (F3), Base Production (F4), Satellite (F6) and Unit Information (F7). Just press the corresponding function key and select the faction's icon that appears near the bottom of the screen. There may be some other benefits that I'm forgetting right now.

Thanks! I'm guessing the F keys will let me see my own info too?
I'm used to Civ 3 with the advisor screens putting my city info all in 1 table.

That's right, the F keys mentioned above display information for your own faction and for factions you have infiltrated.
