When civilizations are revealed, we generally look at the uniques and try to figure out how to play it to the best of our abilities, getting excited about the possibilities this civilization has to offer. That's great, but in this thread, I want to try something a little different, looking at civilizations from a critical light, and try to figure out why they might end up as one of the many civilizations that doesn't end up winning. We will try to find exploits and holes in their uniques, and try to figure out times or situations where a civilization might be vulnerable to either being conquered or falling behind in the game, and how other civilizations can take advantage of this.

I'll start with Rome, since we just got information on it. Rome is very strong in the classical era, but their classical era bonuses pushes them to snowball as much as possible early, leaving them with only a small window to use their UUs and UAs. If they don't get an early huge empire, they're in trouble, and the legion's increased production cost might make a huge empire difficult to defend. Rome's forts are really good at defending choke points, but a wide empire is vulnerable to a multi-front war, and fast units like horsemen can get in to Rome's cities and pillage, forcing them to make more soldiers than they'd like or need. Since legionaries are expensive and Rome wants to go wide, it might be hard to have enough soldiers to guard everywhere in Rome at once, even with their roads.

If Rome is too busy focusing on defense early, they'll be slower at expanding, get fewer districts than they want, and not have a huge lead by the time the midieval era comes along. Eventually, as other civs tech up, Rome can find themselves not having taken full advantage of their bonuses, and start finding themselves falling behind after the classical era. A good medieval or renaissance UU can really hurt Rome and start conquering, and a multi-front war can leave Rome's once formidable defenses broken.

Rome is a great civ early game, but acts like the shoshone in civ V, they need to get an early lead and use that to snowball to victory, but if they can't do that, they're going to get surpassed. Getting to the glory of Rome shouldn't be too difficult, but avoiding the fall or Rome is going to be something all Roman players should fear.

Next up: Greece (make a post showing how Greece might lose, then post another civ for someone else to take down)

Rome is much weaker on island and archipelago maps.

There is less space, fewer expansion options, and roads can't connect cities on different land masses.

Assuming that Baths need to be adjacent to fresh water (like Aqueducts), Rome could have issues on maps or start locations with little water.

If Legions require Iron, then it may be challenging if there is no Iron nearby.

High levels of Barbarian activity (or highly aggressive opponents) could be problematic for early settler expansion, defending your fledgling cities, and protecting your trade routes.

Next up: Greece (make a post showing how Greece might lose, then post another civ for someone else to take down)

If Greece is in an area with no hills, not only can they not take advantage of their unique Acropolis district but they can't even build Theater districts to begin with, severely stunting their cultural growth!

On island and archipelago maps, they may have limited access to City States. Or aggressive civs (Germany, Aztecs, Scythia) may conquer nearby City States in the early game. That severely restricts Pericles' Leader ability.

It seems like boxing in Rome ASAP will be key in defeating them. Forward settle like a boss in strategic locations if possible. Basically, prevent the from getting a complete ring of cities around their capital so they don't have a secure base to move troops around in.

IMO the best and only way to fight Rome is a patch which cuts 40% of its huge bonuses

All right, we seem to be working backwards, so next civ: Norway.

(anyone who posts an answer can say the next civ)

Norway spawns near a pole where all the coastal areas are blocked off by ice. (Those types of maps were surprisingly frequent in Civ V).

Well Norway in a landlocked map can't do much, or if you manage to prevent them from building any city in coastal areas (and/or invading any port they may have).

Pretty much their strong point is to grow and fight by the coast, so land-locking them is the key.

Next civ: Scythia

Easy, have Scythia on an isolated or island start and you're pretty much done for (Even worse, an island start next to Norway) Also, in a very niche case, very harsh terrain (and I mean just terrible like marshes with rivers next to every tile) would be able to stop them. Pretty much anything that can stop those early horse units like a couple of Hoplites.

Next civ: Kongo

Kongo is easy: no nearby civ founds a religion.

Next civ: China.

I don't know how hard I'd want to forward settle towards Rome. Early access to forts and the fact that they have connected cities faster and legions to build roads towards the front line would make capturing anyone aggressively expanding fairly easy. I mean, sure, maybe be a bit more aggressive in Romes direction, but if you try to change your build order too much to try and plop down a few extra settlers in his face, the Rome player could just pump a few units and expand using the fact that all his Roman cities come connected and thus his supply lines will be a lot shorter.

You get crappy terrain and resources which mean you can't meet the requirements for wonders.

No desert/flood plains in sight -> No Pyramids for you!
You are landlocked so no coast in sight -> No Great Lighthouse or Colossus for you!
No stone in sight -> No Stonehenge for you!
No river in sight -> No Hanging Gardens for you!
No hills in sight -> No Oracle for you!

@ China

Early War, preferably with horses to just pillage and steal builders, just grind him until Medieval Age. After that he we will be too weak to do anything. OR Box him in and Isolate. let him build all the Wonders for you to take later :)

Next Civ: Germany

Next Civ: Germany

Germany has bonuses to:

-Production (Hansa + Free District + Cheaper Submarines)
-Attacking City states

Your best option is to let him conquer one City State, liberate it (and become Suzerain for free, I expect) and then levy its military. Once that is under control, pillage his districts with the extra units, he should have more than he is able to defend on that point.

Next Civ: Brazil

Germany gets extra military bonus card too, and I'm not sure how many units you get from the city state if it just faced total defeat in combat, Germany will have combat bonus to these units anyway

Please go ahead an propose your own way of defeating Germany or move on to Brazil mate.

@Germany

Yeah, Contain his Army with Levies(good idea Plus Ultra)pillage his Hansa's and Commerce Districts and try to bankrupt him. Once he got no money he will fold. I think Norway will be a good counter if he is Coastal, because his most important Districts will probably close to the coast due to Adjacency Boni. Norway could do really do some dmg.

@ Brazil

Chop out his rainforests :).... seriously stop his gold, stop his faith. He cant spend what he doesnt have therefore he can't get no refund. "Encourage" him to spend his faith on religious units rather than great people....Chop out his rainforests :)

Next Civ: India

India

Convert other religious civs to your religion so their religions do not spread to India. Bribe religious civs to declear war on India. Build alot of spear and quickly tech for pikes. Raid him constantly, target his steepwells and farms to keep his cities small, camp him with apostels to kill any missionary that get close to India.
