Defense FAQ

Q. How do I beat rounds 12-20?
A. Build ranged units

Q. Help I can't beat rounds 12-20!
A. You aren't using enough ranged units
Thanks GVBN for spoiling defense. I just realize (with your example) ranged units attacks are not effected by being stacked. Here I was trying to keep each unit in a separate space. That's makes defense too easy.

How do you build more cities? I thought you could only build one ...

At the time of building things, click on cities tab, click on the map in a designated city placement area.

So are we sure then (any confirmation?), panthers are invisible (sometimes), perhaps they need to be detected at least once by a scout or something? Ive never had a problem with them until this latest game, I find that odd.

Anyways, Ill try to stockpile some ranged units, now that Im playing Afterworld it may take a week or so to get back to this...

You need a scout to see them. In one of my games I saw a panther on top of mountain . . . those sneaky bastards.

Does anyine have the following problem?
If you build the maximum number of cities, you cannot purchase tech?

In any case, I have not been able to purchase tech past the first row, even though I have over 1600 coins
I think this occurs after the max number of cities are placed --
Any one run into this?

I've had this problem after re-loading a saved game, and I only had 2 or 3 cities. So it's nothing to do with city numbers. And it's not just restricted to techs beyond the first row either, I couldn't purchase the 'Riders' tech.

Ive never seen that problem, I have all cities placed, I have 10, Im pretty sure theres no other city placement configuration that will give you more, will hafta experiment more in my next game. Ive never not been able to get a tech I wanted, must be a bug...

Ok so I put in some gametime on this instead of my Afterworld game, its turns out Panthers ARE invisible! Wth! How could I not have noticed this before, I musta just had a lot of scouts all over the place or something. I usually spread them out quite a bit, 3 in the ice/forest area, 3 accross the map at the midway point, and maybe 1 floater.

Im up to level 14 now I think, got quite the nice stockpile of archers/cats/trebs and 1 anti-tank unit - expensive bastard. I cant imagine have more than a couple of these uber expensive units...

My strategy so far is going something like this:

-build 1 city every round, I built my 10th city on level 11

-teching slowly seems ok, you cant afford the big stuff anyways till later / dont bother with the spy tech (can someone confirm its uselessness?)

-build up some good warriors at first, but get riders and macemen highly promoted before the $h!t hits the fan around level 15

-spend all extra cash on archers/cats, cheap yet effective

-dont kill anything with bombarding units, you waste the chance to get the XP from klling them

-once yer units get to combat V & maybe march, switch them out with a different unit that needs XP

-save enuf money from the turn before to buy a tech PLUS one of its unlocked units, not (as much) point in just getting a tech

Aight, finally beat it a couple nights ago, defense that is. Well earned. In the end I didnt need as many units as I had, they never penetrated my outter defenses. Also, I never finished the tech tree, pretty sure all 3 of the last ones were still there. They cost a lot and the units are bloody expensive.

I had two bottleneck points, one in the screeshot, and another smaller stack of similar units to the group of hills to the south. That seemed to do it.

The hardest part were weeding out the suicide grenadiers & detecting the stealth panthers, everything else was weakened to the brink of death by bombarding units and destroyed by the rest.

Anyone else having any luck?

***typical that the one time I use a ******** name I need to use it on the forums...

I have the game saved from level 20 but like mentioned before it is tedious to just continuously bombard things. I never got to the fancy later techs either, longbows are all that you need.

The scenario is pretty bugged. The mechs seem to be flying while invisible and warp onto my stack of bombard units after they die, making for a strange graphic. It would be nicer to be able to build fortifications in your cities, have the enemies a bit stronger, and be able to use a more varied tech tree.

Agreed it could be improved, but I think a lot of these scenarios are just the beginning, giving a mod maker a jump start - this could easily be improved to make something even more impressive, I give it props for what it is.

If I were to play it again I would impose some artifical limits on myself, see how few units I could use and still live or something...

What should I build each round? I don't know how to balance cities/techs/units because they are so expensive - people say found a city each round, but they are so expensive I can't do anything else second round. Techs cost the same as cities. I don't know how to get both while increasing the amount of units I have - right now only three in round two.

I agree. Easy enough to win. Don't waste money on research or fancy units that cause 3% more damage, bombard bombard bombard - and leave those promoted Jungle / Forestmen fortified in their terrain.

When you can see the paths the incoming stream of enemies are using, you can put melee attackers out of the way of the suicide grenadiers, then get them to attack the stack those bombers are in to take out the best defender and give your ranged units a free shot at the bomber! 5 hours later ... Ta-da!

Yep, had this problem, too. Got pretty far and then realized I couldn't buy any techs. So after a WTH I just quit. I think it's a bug, and also I didn't have maximum cities either.

Is there a trick to using ranged units? I'm finding that their range is always toward your cities so they can't bombard enemy units until it's too late and they engage in combat with my forest warriors. This isn't so bad for panthers, but I'm worried about what will happen in later rounds! I've found that techs are way too expensive to ever be able to buy. I've attached a save so you can see if I'm doing anything wrong.

COULD SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!?!?!?! I attempted to play this scenario and got killed in round 12. I read this thread, but it's of little help because I don't know how to build enough ranged units to kill the psycho samurais. I just don't have enough gold. How do I get 10 cities? Whenever I build my 7th, the enemy starts attacking more cities then Athens! Also, I rarely find the huts (I guess I'm no good at exploring) and the enemy swarms me with multiple stacks of 1-2 units all at once so even if I had enough ranged units (though I don't see how that's possible, given that they cost 300 gold each and I only ever have 1500 gold to play with each round) I could never kill them all. I have attached a save. Please help. This mod really should have difficulty levels for those of us who aren't the players that can regularly beat deity.
