Has anyone successfully demanded from the AI? I swear I did it once against Persia when I needed open boarders to fight an enemy. He was neutral or friendly and said something like "given the current events, I accept." I easily could have dreamed all of this too.

I usually only use to get a civ I accidentally made a DoF with denounce me which gives them a diplo hit and I can denounce and stay friends with the world. So it hasn't worked with "friends" either. Maybe the next Afraid AI I see will be bullied like a CS.

Yes, often on Emperor if I'm warmongering. Usually need to be quite far ahead of them or massing an army near their borders. In my mind I've always treated it similar to a Peace-Treaty without having to go to war first.

I find it useful when I have finished a war with CIV-A and am going to war soon with CIV-B- all the while CIV-C is nearby and is my next target after CIV-B... Demand from CIV-C and use those funds/happiness resources to aid my war against CIV-B.

In my first game with the Zulus, I went to war with Germany who was on the start of a peninsula. After I captured Berlin and made peace, I moved past them to attack Babylon on the tip of the peninsula. After I captured Babylon and made peace, I tried to get back to the mainland, but Germany had built a new city that blocked my route (I hadn't yet discovered Astronomy).

So I contacted Bismarck and offered to trade Open Borders, but he refused. So, with my army sitting on the edges of his territory, I demanded that he give me Open Borders and he agreed saying, "If it's the only way to keep the peace . . . " So, rather than trade me OB for OB in return, he refuses and instead winds up giving me OB for free. Shrewd bargaining skills there, Otto!

I was able to demand a luxury from Persia as Huns once. Maybe because I had an army that could easily wipe him off the map in less than 10 turns if I declared war on him.
