Demanding Tribute

I haven't seen the rules on this, I was wondering a couple of things....

Say you demand 100g from a civ and they pay you.

Are you entitled to go to war with them within 20 turns without taking a rep hit?

And are you able to demand more tribute within the 20 turns, or does this come with a rep penalty as well?

I'm playing my first Demigod game, and are getting sick of the Zulus repeatedly demanding tribute from me, then redemanding, then declaring war anyway. Meanwhile, all the other civs love them - I can't get a MA against Zululand with any civ for any price!

Of course with the Zulus, they don't bluff. Their demands literally mean "Give us Literature which nobody else has so we can pawn it off to everyone for cheap, otherwise within 5 turns your land will be crawling with impi and there's nothing you can do about it"

you must have had a rep hit. if the AI says that they would never accept that deal then either Zulus have alliances with everyone or you have a bad rep

No, my rep is clean as a whistle, and AI attitude is good towards me. Have done plenty of trades with everyone etc.

Just very upsetting how Shaka can keep demanding tribute from me whenever he wants and nobody else can see what a thieving bastard he really is!

It's always interesting getting into new challenges once you crank up the difficulty a notch. You find yourself dealing with new issues you never had to worry about in the easy levels.

well, he can do that because he is powerful. Go kick his ass and he will be submissive like a cat.

You won't be able to get an MA vs the Zulu unless you are already at war with them. Try declaring on the Zulu and then buying in Allies for old techs or something. Remember that each successive MA gets more expensive as well.

If they demand Lit from you don't give in. If they declare war then Lit should buy everyone of their neighbors into a MA against them.

Look at my sig. You called Shaka an asshat. I'm working on a mod in which that will give you 30000 VPs for doing it.

Civ leaders sometimes crack me up. After reducing Shaka to one puny island city, he greets my visit by saying : "Greetings, friend, what can mighty Zululand do for your backwards civilization?"

Make GPT and lux deals with them. Build military. If they demand and you say no, I think that they are the ones that get a rep hit (because they broke the lux/GPT deal.) This also makes them less likely to demand from you and declare war if you say no (and if they do declare war, you may have gotten a tech, luxuries, or cash out of it.) When you have enough military, make demands from Shaka and invade his lands so that he won't be there to demand from you.

I have a question regarding tribute, semi-related to this.

I'm playing a game with me always in feudalism (just for kicks) and at the moment I have the most advanced and powerful army on my continent. I have no reason to demand tribute from anyone, but occasionally I'll save my game right before I leave, and I'll see if anyone will give me tribute. No one will, not even one gold. This isn't a big deal, but it might be later once I start subjugating more of my neighbors. Does the CPU ever give you tribute, and how do you get them to that point?

Also, my advice for problems with the Zulu is get them to declare war on you. Build embassies everywhere, and then ask people for military alliances. The Zulu are generally so aggressive they make everyone angry that they won't even need a tech or gold to go to war. I got all of their neighbors to go to war with them for free.

@ Aegis Shield: The computer will occassionally give tribute when you demand it, but you have to be much more powerful and not ask for a whole lot. For example, they would never give a city, but sometimes I demand one anyway to get them mad at me. They will often give maps, small amounts of gold, or possible a luxury if you are lucky.

In general I find the AI doesn't give you tribute if you ask for it "normally" through the new deal screen. However, if you renegotiate peace, you are more likely to get it from a weak civ.

On my recent huge Monarch game with 15 AI, I was the most powerful civ after destroying 3 of them. I had a tech lead on all civs and was selling the techs to the top 5 or 6 AI who could afford them. The remaining 6 civs were backwards and wouldn't give gpt for anything so I demanded tribute from each of them individually. If I recall correctly, 5 of them told me where I could go or what I could kiss, but one caved and gave me what I asked. It was a good day because I get tired of them demanding things from me. It is about time to get a little payback.
