4ghz on air

Linkage

I was worried that the world would no longer have cheap, fast, overclockable chips when I read about the restrictions on Nehalem. AMD is going to win back the gaming market with this.

Nehalem is pretty overclockable, as long as you have a good mobo. That, and it doesn't need to be OC'd to compete.

how many people have liquid nitrogen just lying around their not using:p

of course quad core 3ghz(what it will actually be non OC) is pretty sweet

That's a good point because depending on what you're doing, 2x speed can either be a lot or not really that much at all. A good clean installation tends to run well on almost any modern PC. I think 6GHz just sounds good because it's been a barrier for so long.

Really, I'm just waiting on a Nehalem-type cpu to hit 6gHz stable. Then we can talk about it being awesome. Either that, or LN cooling becoming easy ( never gonna happen.)

I did note that it can exceed 4ghz on air alone, although these numbers are likely best-case scenario. I hope that we get decent performance/clock and performance/price.

Overclocking just sends chills up my spine. IMO, it's just one step away from having a China Syndrome at your hands :run:

There is no hard and fast rule with nature. The rated speed is arbitrary and has been determined as stable under standard conditions so as to regulate returns.

Apart from generating heat, all that happens when you overclock, is signal loss (attenuation). This is why some increase their voltage too.

Still chugging along with a 2.14 core 2 duo and an agp 7800gs and 2gb of ram.

It runs all my applications well at the moment. I figure i'll revamp my rig when I can build a computer that runs Medieval 2 Total War on max settings and maxed armies without so much as an iota of slowdown at $500. It'll come sooner then you think :-)

Anyway... how long until a 10ghz processor is created?

Take a look at Newegg, you could probably do it now...

I doubt processors will be shipped with >5ghz clock speeds for a long while. It's easier and cheaper to just keep adding new cores and improve performance/ clock.
