Denouncing

I've only demanded Open Borders as a last resort to declaring war for my GM Bombs. Never have demanded gold or luxs. It works sometimes, sometimes it doesn't.

The only times I have ever used the demand function is when I am about to go to war so it is really just a final warning of sorts but I have never seen it actually work although that is probably because I demand a city or 2 which isn't to surprising. If the demand isn't that crazy is it army size that affects if it works or not like with a city-state?

Do you ever demand tribute?
it seems to almost never work. sometimes i do it when i've already totally sullied my relationship with an AI and want to squeeze whatever profit i can out of it but even if they're on one city after i nearly annihilate them they tend to reject trade demands

Do you tend to denounce other civs?
Not mentioned so far is that denounce can often stave off a DOW. Sometimes you get DOWed anyway. Sometimes it gets you just a few turns. Sometimes it puts off the DOW indefinitely.

I am amazed any time it gets me even a couple more turns to prepare. Makes no sense really.

it's a strategic decision. if one civ is warmongering and getting denounced by the rest of the world, denouncing them yourself will make everyone else like you more. alternatively, if many civs are already friends with you and you denounce someone, you may make whoever you denounce a target for your friends to denounce as well. it's a method of controlling diplomacy

sometimes it will make no difference (except for the civ you are denouncing) and other times it can be a poor decision if the civ you are denouncing is friends with many others

What he said. Although I never feel like I HAVE to denounce a warmonger unless I'm playing Sweden.
