Desert Dunes (realistic)

Great work :goodjob:
Eventually the deserts aren't terribly flat and boring.
Keep working. I think plains need some small trees or bushes or even tiny hills. ;)
Don't you think so ?

Well, yea, but that I'll leave to others. :-)

I just downloaded Sn00py's new terrain 3.0. AWESOME! The only thing I don't like about it are... guess what... the dunes.

He also has the problem of repeating dunes. But his look like piles of sand. Not that they're bad, but mine are more realistic I think.

But generally, Sn00py's the god of terrain!

The fact that desert has those "layers" or whatever (long strips of dunes) is that desert in real life had dunes that stretched for miles in a single direction, However, Making good looking repeating dunes is a difficult task, and anyone who can successfully modify sn00pies current masterpiece to have good dunes definately deserves recognition for it

Non-repeating repetitious terrain. Hmmm, sounds tough. Like I said earlier in this same thread, it can be done, but it's a lot of work.

It's not possible to do it with just one square that's repeating all the time. The desert has no own tileset, it just consists of the grassland-desert, plains-desert, hills-desert, etc transitions. In each of these there is just one tile with a real desert. How make a nice transitional thing (like the hills are) with just one tile?

BTW I like your signature & picture. I loved that game!

Well technically, no land terrain has it's own tileset (ocean and sea do). There are at least three different "all desert" tiles that may be selected (I don't know what causes one to be selected over another). In addition, the edge transititions can be exploited (won't help in the case of huge expanses) to relieve some of the repetition.

To be honest, there are more possibilities with this than with tundra as there is only one all tundra tile and large expanses are guaranteed to use it.

The one thing that can be done to get rid of the tiled look (but not the repetition) is to have the dunes wrap off the edge of the tile and back onto the other side. This will make it harder to spot the tiles (it will be repeating though). Although I didn't remotely try to have anything as detailed as dunes in my mod (it would run counter to the intent and style), I did use this technique all the time. The hard part is synching it up between all tiles in all tile sets.

I am in the process of making my own terrain set and I too used the edges of the tiles to avoid repetition. Then I modified the middle of each tile to add its own customized details. The result is that the pattern looks organic and random.

Mmmm...kay... those are the best dunes sofar... ...but noone ever thinks about it this way: a huge amount of all deserts are mountains, its not the plain old dunes and such... i would really appreciate if someone would make a rocky AND with dunes desert that would be compatible with Sn00pys third. The rocks in a desert are usually the same colour as the sand, because they are sandstone... ...the sandstone from where the sand originally came from...
All that would be needed for a nice rocky effect would be a few sharp shadows and a couple of highlightings...
I already tried to do one myself but the result was just H.O.R.R.I.B.L.E : )
