Hi
I have the civilization 3 complete edition, I used to play the original but I lost the CD :-( the only difference I can see with this version is that it automatically destroys any cities I take over. I used to have an option whether to destroy or take over a city. This is really annoying me, is there any way I can change this without buying the original version again?
Hope you can help
Thanks

It's not the game version it's a mechanic, you need more than 1 population in a city to have that choice, having one automatically destroys the city.

It can be captured at size one, IF it has borders popped or the lone citizen is your nationality.

...or the nationality of a third party which you are not at war with.

Example: you are at war with Rome and at peace with Greece. The Romans have captured a Greek town in the past, which is now reduced to size 1 and has no culture expansion. The citizen in that town is still Greek. If you now capture that town from the Romans, it will not auto-raze!

This question seems to come up quite often, so let me make a complete summary here.

A captured town will not be destroyed (auto-razed), if one of the following conditions is satisfied:
  • It is size 2 or bigger.
  • It has collected at least 10 culture points in it's history, either by your enemy or by one of its previous owners.
  • The lone citizen living in that town has the nationality of a "third party" which is currently at peace with you.

I've noticed that, during a war, the AI will burn through all its citizens to make Units, oftentime and quite quickly reducing its towns to one by the time you approach. I think this can be frustrating when combined with the AI's lack of interest in creating Culture, forcing the player to take Settlers on battle-marches (which is counter-intuitive).

Combine this with losing ALL your troops if that one town 'flips' back for whatever reason, regardless if you had 1,000,000 soldiers or 10 in a pop-size one town, and you have even more reason to perform the counter-intuitive action of making Settlers part of your 'army' (but not actually 'in' an Army Unit... sigh...).

Basically dude, just take some Settlers with you, lol.

or or - you decide!

I believe it's the case that the more soldiers you have, the lower the chance of flipping, eventually reaching zero. So if you had 1000 soldiers in a city, I'm pretty sure you'd be safe.

Good summary, Lanzelot. Nice to see this written out completely in one post.

As far as I know, the possibility of a flip never quite reaches zero, though it can become very small.
