Determining Map Size

I'm having trouble deciding how many players and city states can/should be on my custom map.
The tile size is 84x64 and when I make the mod in modbuddy and load up civ V it only lets me select 8 players. I have no idea how many players there should even be on this map, or how to determine its size per any standard of naming. Even if I did know though, I wouldn't know how to change the player support.

Advice/help?
and
Thank you

from a civ4 map tutorial..

52x32, 4
64x40, 6
84x52, 8
104x64, 10
128x80, 12

suggested numbers. nothing wrong to overcrowd or not a map. also remember that water tiles can not be settled so it takes away at potential city sites

Thanks, but I'm not sure I understand why overcrowding isn't an issue, and does that mean that the player size is pre-defined by the map size?

overcrowding is how you want it. if you want many or not

the suggested sizes comes with predefined player amounts.. think there is a XML with the value in i'm pretty sure i saw it in another thread earlier
