I was playing as the Aztecs, sharing borders with the Mayans and one Portugese city, with the Dutch, the Portugese and the Zulu nearby but overseas or the other side of Maya. I'm late AA (researching Rep, still need Con.), the Mayans are the same, the others are all ahead with probably 2-4 MA techs by now.

I go to war with the Portugese, hoping to smash-and-grab a nearby city with Ivory. I get an MGL which I use to create an army. Later, I go to war with the Mayans and pop a second MGL. I can't yet build the FP, but should be able to with another 4-5 cities (which I'll probably have at the end of this war. The mayans are a complete mess and I have a lot of Ancient Cavs, Jaguar Warriors and cats. running around). I used the MGL to build a second army, but I'm not sure that it was the right thing to do. At the end of the war I had to wait a ridiculously long time for the FP build in Chichen Itza.

Generally, would it have been better to use the MGL to rush the FP at the end of a longer, costlier war, or to use it to make an army and make the war easier?

Generally, in C3C the location of the Forbidden Palace doesn't matter as much as having it built early. Obviously, I don't know what your layout looked like, but typically I would build it in a core town where it wouldn't take that long instead of in a former rival town (and I'd also start a prebuild for it before I get the pop up)

If you really want the Forbidden Palace somewhere where it will take a while to build, then I would absolutely use the MGL to rush it. However, since armies are so overpowered, my first choice would (generally) be to build the Forbidden Palace somewhere where it wouldn't take as long and use the MGL for another army.

Are they actually overseas or on your landmass? If they are overseas, and you won't have boats able to transport an army to them anytime soon, then that could change the answer.

Heroic epic? - if you are going to do a lot of warring the extra chance of future MGL's may be worth it if you don't really need it now.

I'd say another army.

The heroic epic doesn't take many shields and your FP, AFAIK, should be close to your core, anyways, so it shouldn't take long to build it.

that's a tough choice.

I would probably go with an army in that case - you are militaristic, so you get promotions fast, so having lots of elite battles isn't an issue (especially on demigod)

that said, if I was really close to being able to build the FP, I would just save the MGL and rush the FP, maybe do a lot of fighting with veteran units.
