Did you like 'Beyond the Sword' for Civ IV? Would you want it again for VI?

Just like the title says..

I loved the post modern era techs that you found in BTS. It is one reason why I loved Civ IV so much.

I have read many posts and I get a feeling that many folks hated post modern techs in the Civilization series. I for one got started here via Call 2 Power 2 which is nothing at all Civ but still its is similar.

Do you feel an expansion with 'future techs' would do well? Domed Cities, Cyborg troops, Grav tanks, Hell lances and plasma weapons! All good stuff.

/cheers!

I certainly think this game needs a fleshing out at the upper end. I know I'd be in the minority, but I would not begrudge an expansion focusing on the near future.

No. Enhancing the postmodern period is fine if they can back it up with good gameplay additions, like a return of ideologies and the UN. But corporations were an unnecessary drag. And no future stuff please!

Yes and yes. I think it was the best expansion the series has ever had.

I loved corporations. They added a much needed gameplay addition to the late game and another route to global hegemony that didn't require painting the map with your borders. You want a livelier late game? The easiest way to do that is with the addition of mechanics that only turn on in the late game. Corporations are such a mechanic.

Then there was the near future content. Generally I love the idea of including futuristic units, techs and mechanics, but it requires the game to be rebalanced. Most games can be won well before getting to future tech; that leaves a lot of underutilized content. Future tech should only be included if the victory conditions are tweaked to require a little more time.

The late game future tech was fun. I am surprised folks dislike it. Yes the game would need tweaking to extend the game so you can get to such content which I am good with!

I personally dislike the idea of futuristic military units, because it’s a cheap way to spice up combats through different unit upgrades, basically a gravity tank works the same way as a modern tank or cyborg troops work the same way as mechanized infantry, what I want to see however are enhanced mechanics, for example radars in order to make air warfare more interesting, or new mechanics such as cruiser/ballistic missiles alongside with a better missile defence system. The modern warfare part should also absolutely be followed with deeper diplomatic mechanics such as regional military organisations, armament control, casus belli bans (…), in order to have a more realistic and dense approach to late game warfare.

That being said some near futuristic technologies such as orbital farms or fusion power wouldn’t bother me too much.

Well seeing as how things are developing now, its not hard to leap to a drone based combat in the future. I can see cruise missiles or drone craft with ranges of the entire planet. Launch them in cities and they attack another city or unit on another continent and return if successful.

Also the idea of superior ground to air defense would be a wonderful counter to it. Still the idea of higher numbers in attk/def for new skins of units like Grav Tanks or Xcom type troops would also be welcome.
