Desktop: It worked out of the box and has only got better with every patch released.

Laptop: Worked after v1.52 patch.

I haven't had any problems with crashing or terrible slowness. However, there are still some graphical glitches - random black or other color bits on terrain, randomly leaders have 'strings' or other problems. I have patched the game (twice).
And on my husband's laptop, the animals are missing, just the shadows show up.
So I am here looking to see if anyone has solved these problems yet. Still looking.

The game ran out of the box for me. Ran slow but it is a 1.5 gig cpu.

I got this laptop about six months ago. For obvious reasons, I was a bit pissed when I installed Civ IV and it wouldn't work. I got the Direct X error, followed the instructions in the box, and it still wouldn't work. I set it aside for a week -- during which I counted to ten several times and took many deep breaths -- and then had the idea of coming to CFC. In a few minutes I found a link to the laptop software I needed, installed it, and it works! It now works fluidly, with crashing occuring only at a minimum at the late hours of the night. Thanks CFC! You guys are the coolest!

Define works?

I got it working out of the box by doing wierd tweaks, downgrading drivers and accepting regular crashes.

The crashes are still here and I still need to use a 3 year old driver to avoid a BSOD, so I voted still doesn't work.

Worked out of the box, with updated nvidea drivers.

One crash on a huge map before patch 1.09.

No crashes since patch 1.52...

Wonder movies still skip, or don't start, which I would care about if the wonder movies were wonderful instead of generic.

Game play is awesome and just one more turn until 4 in the morning.

My didn't work until I went through a bit of a convaluted process to get an updated video driver on my machine (Couldn't install the driver directly, had to hack it first, then install). Had to wait about a month after the release before somebody found out how to do this and posted the solution here.

That option really isn't in this poll though.

Worked from the moment I installed the game. However, with 1.52 I'm now receiving the floating eyeball thing sometimes. Never used to happen, it's only with the new patch.

Worked fine for me out the box. The only problem were my video codecs needed to be updated. But that wasn't Firaxis' fault.
