I cannot seem to understand the diplomacy screen. The one with all of the faces on it. I've tried selecting a couple of them, but it doesn't seem to do any good. I've tried it while holding down shift, alt, ctrl, and every variation thereof.

I heard that its suposed to tell me who's at war and such, but it doesn't do anything. Can anyone help with this? I'm sure its in the manual somewhere, but I can't seem to find my manual.

Wow ! I've thought that after 268 posts you'd have that figured out :)

The lines linking each face, specifically their color, tell you who's at war with whom.

That's my point. I don't see any lines linking each face.

on the right you can select/deselect options (Treaties -> MPP, ROP, Alliances, etc... | Trade -> Embargoes, Active, Potential, etc...)

just check/uncheck the corresponding boxes.

EDIT:
also to find out what Diplomatic Agreements one civ has with the other civs (including you) you need an embassy on their capital. I think this goes for Trade Deals too (Embargoes, Active). So to have a Diplo Window full of crisscrossing lines in blue, red (and also dotted red lines for alliances) and green build embassies on all civs.

other civ leaderheads don't appear until you come into contact with them.

2nd EDIT:
Zeeter, you need an embassy on another civ to find out what other civs they are at war or at peace with.

Thanks, I'll check tonight. I thought I'd had embasies with everyone before but no lines, but maybe not.

I dont think this is the solution. Zeeter said he didnt see any lines at all. When u do not have embassies u do not see relations between other civs but should see you're own relations by clicking the pics. When pressing control and clicking others civs u see all relations (with embassy). There something else going on. maybe no selections made on the right?

zeeter, what version are you running? There's a bug in 1.21 where the diplomacy lines between civs in the foreign advisor screen don't appear. I have the same problem...hopefully the new patch will get rid of it.

I've played with the selections on the right a thousand times. Unchecking things, rechecking things, etc. I've selected my civ and another civ. I've done everything that would concievably do something, but to no avail. I started this thread to see if it was just something silly that I was doing wrong. That is, go to options and select "show diplomacy lines" or something along those lines.

I'm not suggesting that this is a problem with the game, as it seems to work for everyone else. I'm just saying that I don't know how to use it even though I've spent significant time trying to figure it out. Call me dumb, call me ignorant, call me whatever you want, but I just want to know how the screen works.

Nope, zeeter, it's not you. Like I said, same exact problem here, and there's nothing I've been able to do that would fix it. The lines were there up until v1.21 was installed. I know that doesn't fix anything, but it might make you feel better.

Periodically, Joan of Arc also appears without hair.:)

I may be able to. I'll download the patch tonight and try it. If it still doesn't work I'll post a save.

Imagine. The patch is out last night and there I am watching Absolute Power with my PC off. I could have been downloading the patch while watching tv - But noOooo! Stupid me has to wait until the kiddies go to bed tonight before I even start the download!

Also, there are more Civs in the game than appear on my Diplomacy screen. How do I see them? I just keep a notepad next to my computer and write down all the wars and stuff.

To see the rest of the civs, just hold down either shift, ctrl, or alt while right-clicking on the head. Then select the appropriate civ. This is a cumbersome way to go about diplomacy and Firaxis certainly could have done better and shown all civs at the same time.

zeeter, you need to remember that Civ3 was designed as a game with 8 max civs. When the developers were told to up that to 16, they tried fixing the diplo window, too. They decided the end result with all 16 visible was worse than what we have now, so they bit the bullet and accepted that they would get ranted at.

(One of the firaxians posted something to that effect a few months ago, in response to a query/rant on that subject.)

i did not go as much as noting each war to find out who was fighting who (i nearly did that though). so aside from the foreign advisor (who does not show you if Civ A is angry with Civ B) use the military advisor and take note of the worker's captured and lost sliders. It's not definitive but it gives you an idea of what happened in the early years before you made contact with them and how much conflict there was. You can then make a better judgement who to ally with and also avoid making MPP deals with two ex-archenemies.

They should have ABANDONED the F4 diplo screen due to that change and switch to a report format without those dumb pictures of other leaders. Those pics are absolutely useless while there is lots of useful info about other nations that is so TEDIOUS to find (how much gold they have, what techs, what can you export to them, MPP, etc.)
It would have been better to have a report format where you have countries on the left column and across the top you have war, peace, alliance, MPP, gold, latest tech, etc. You can then glance and decide what to investigate further rather then tediously going thru each civ one by one.

The amount of diplomatic tedium in the game is ridiculous. Why did Firaxis decide that player tedium is a good thing?
