long time lurker, first time question asker.

 i've read occasionally about the ability to direct a vassal's research but have had no such luck figuring out how to do so. did i misunderstand something or is there a way to tell your vassal(s) what to research, effectively giving you the capacity to research two (or more) techs at once.

You enter diplomatic discussions, and then go to "let us discuss something else". In there there is an option called "we would like you to research....."

It doesn't give you the ability to research two things at once, because you don't get the tech, but if you've got good relations with your vassal, you can trade for it.

Couldn't you "force" your vassal to give you it? (the tech) (otherwise you declare war on them?)

What i do is make my vassal research something that takes a long long time to finish... Then when hes 1 turn from done i switch it to something else.

My one vassal stayed in the middle ages the whole game because i did that.

I see a lot of people going out of their way to treat their vassals as horribly as possible. I really wonder why. As soon as I get some unlucky civ to capitulate to me, I start doing things to improve our relationship.

Don't you guys realise that your vassals are your allies? In war they fight for you. Against a strong opponent, the number and strength of your vassals can really make the difference.

I will gift vassals tech to make them useful in my wars. I've been known to gift resources too. Coal, say, for them to make railroads for my troops.

Keeping your vassals down is not only pointless and dumb, it actually makes you civ weaker. Because you pay more in city maintenance, yet get nothing out of it.

Yeah, that's right. Think it through.

You have to pay for their city maintenance?

Also, what if your Vassal were to break free from you? That would suck :( Especially if you gifted it with a lot of things.

thanks jimbob. i thought all you could do in the 'discuss other things' section was hear who hates who and make war.

good points willowmound. in my current game i've got freddy as a vassal, half a continent away, next to an angry mao with a lotta old units but a bloody lot of them. i'm trying to get fred to catch up to my early-modern techs so he can bear the brunt of any chinese surprise attack while i focus on spaceships or however i decide to end this game.

i'd hoped that in warlords, on prince, the AI would make at least a decent effort to fight for terra. i'm gonna waltz my way to victory, oy.

Two things, Gary King. You don't have to pay their city maintainance. You just pay extra maintainance on your own cities, the amount depending on how many cities your vassal has. The point, though, is that the cost of vassalising the cities is much less than owning them outright.
Also, if you take the time to make nice with your vassals, there is far FAR less chance of them breaking away (or even WANTING to break away).

But then what do those '50% to break free (currently at 33%)' or something mean?

A vassal can break away. It's the risk you take. But I've had vassals get to the point where they could have broken away, yet they didn't.

Why? Because I was the best ally they could have, and we both benefited from each others' company.

If they lose half they're land or get 2x as much land or pop as you they can peacefully cancel the capitulation (well you could declare war when they ask "what are you going to do about it?").

Hi all, guys…. ;)

…but what about a “human vassal” in a multiplayer game? After such war agreement, what can it force your human vassal to combat for you? He can declare war, obviously, but without sending any unit against your enemy. He could make nothing of what you want from him (but resources require), and you couldn’t do nothing against him.

I think programmers could face this problem, perhaps planning penalty clauses if a vassal (human or AI) do not honour a vassal treaty.

(By the way, I think there would be penalty clauses to declare war too)

C U all :goodjob:

Well as for a Human Vassal, and you being able to do nothing against him...I don't believe He can declare War.. therefore, He can't do anything to you. (except out culture you)
