DirectX specs: Dx9 will make it!

Nuts. I wanted an excuse to get a new computer

Of course it will. Requiring a newer version would exclude more than 50% of Firaxis' potential customers. That would be very bad business sense.

My computer is not low-end but I still run DX9. I refuse to upgrade from XP, it's simply the fastest and I have yet to see any game make enough of a compelling case to switch to DX11.

Another feature we were unable to take a look at was a mystery button that provides a “strategic view.” They believe this will have many players excited when they release more info on it in the coming months.

That's an intriguing statement. Could it be we're finally going to get a decent strategy layer?

I would be highly suprised if XP SP3, And the latest version of DX9c were not supported.

Now you may not get all the DX10 or 11 eyecandy. So it's akin to watching old analog TV vs a flat screen HD :p. Same video feed and all, but you don't know what you are missing until you see someone elses HD ;p

This is important for a different reason, too: VirtualBox supports DirectX 9. So even if Firaxis doesn't get the Mac version out the door quickly, and even if there never is a Linux version, you can still play it if your hardware is fast enough.

Currently, Civ IV barely runs under Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit on a quad core (Q9550) with Win XP 32 bit with my Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT 512 MB (passive cooling, the computer's day job is a file server). Note the Q9550 is a Core 2 Quad, so it doesn't have nested paging. The i7 -- hopefully the CPU in the next generation of MacBook Pros -- does, and also has the new QPI bus. So if Firaxis helps us out a little with the low-end system requirements, life could be good.
