When the list of techs from which you choose your next research from comes up, why is it that a specific tech disappears for a 'turn' and comes back again later?
I frequently find a list of six techs drops to two on the next visit and then goes up again.
Any ideas, is there a reason, or is it a bug?

The game makes different advances available at different times. I don't know why. I never did. But I know it's not a bug. Carefully planning your tech route will eleviate any problems you might have anyway and you should always have the correct tech choices that way.

I know that techs become available at different times and that there are prerequisites that must be researched first, but that is not what I’m referring to. I normally plan my next 4-5 advances, and get annoyed when advance 2 is no longer available. This may be best illustrated by examle. Assume the list of techs are what you get as options on each visit to research tree.

Visit 1
Tech a
Tech b
Tech c
Tech d
Decide to research Tech a

Visit 2
Tech c
Tech d
? ? where has tech b gone
decide to research tech c

Visit 3
Tech b
Tech d
Tech e
Tech f

Techs E & F now available and tech b has returned.

Is this meant to happen?

Yes, it's meant to happen!

I'm not sure what the justification is, but suffice it to say "you can't always get what you want."

I read a post once, said somehting about techs being offered in a pattern of 1,1,2,1,1,2... 1 being available, 2 being unavailable... I know that isn't really helpful. That's really all I remember though... Might have been on Apolyton or here... Anybody know what I'm thinkin of?

U B Da man, Duke!

Hope folks appreciate the references/searches you do for them! It's funny that probably 99.99% of all the questions asked have the answers already buried somewhere in the bowels of the digital domain, yet can't be easily located

I would add more to some of those responses, but they were done while I was at work, so a quick response is all I can sneak in before I have to 'Alt'+'Tab' back to work.

I do most of my visits/posts from work in my lunch break, the IT system blocks almost all of the links that are added to post, but many thanks Duke I shall check it out from home

I know this is off the subject a bit, but I'd like to know why this happens too. Can anyone explain? Many times a rival shows up with units right on my doorstep, and I wonder what the heck is up, so I contact him and he thinks we aren't at peace.

The reason an AI civ will repeatedly ask for an acceptance of a peace treaty without a declaration of war is to prevent you the human player from having the option to "Insist that you withdraw your troops from our territory" After you have made the acceptance, you should try reading the dialogue that follows. That little piece of dialogue contains a "promise" that the AI will withdraw his troops from your territory.

So therefor you won't find the option "Insist that you withdraw your troops from our territory." In your list of options in the diplomacy screen even if that AI civ does infact have troops in your territory. <img src="graemlins/reddevil.gif" border="0" alt="[Red Devil]" />

Okay, Duke and Dan Edtl, thanks -- I understand that an AI civ might cancel a treaty thru negotiations with another civ, and I also understand the effect that asking for a peace treaty has on my ability to order his units out of my area. But what I don't get is why this can happen. Is this another example of the AI being able to play by another set of rules? My understanding was that peace treaties were "permanent", and breaking one was a big deal. If nothing has happened, at least to my knowledge, but a few turns later my rival knocks on my door and asks for another "permanent" peace treaty, I wonder why.

I've played Civ II for awhile, but I'll admit I am a casual player. I am only just noticing this happening as I start to play regularly on the Prince level. I do not remember it much on the lower levels. Maybe this has something to do with it, I do not know. Thanks again, though, for your answers.
