Disappearing tooltips bug

I have found that since installing BtS, on occasion tooltips will no longer display on the "Select new advance for research" dialog or the "What shall we build in XXX" dialog, also the mousewheel won't scroll the list. This happens in game randomly (ie it will come and go several times during one session).

For me it happens when i click quickly in the beggining of a turn without reading the events messages ... no tooltips at all in a city for example and i have to wait that the messages finish. It happens too with the quest tooltips .. happened once, couldn't see what i have to provide or pay.

This is the most annoying bug in the game, and it's been in the game since it was first released.

I've made some research on this and using the option "right-click menus" is what usually causes it to happen. ALT+TAB out of and then back into the game and it should fix it, until it happens again. I've also read that right-clicking the terrain can fix it, but I have yet to try that.

According to Firaxis, this bug can also occur when you click on a worker action. When this is the cause, hovering your mouse over the flag will fix it.

When this bug occurs, you can't type in things either (i.e. a name for a save or your civilization's details).

Firaxis says they've been unable to reproduce this bug and thus been unable to fix it. That seems odd to me because everyone I've played Civ4 with have been getting this bug, and I get it myself for what seems to be every 10 minutes.

Yes, it's very annoying and it's quite incredible they still haven't fixed it. It's indeed the right-click menus that cause it. I get it from every single right click (like for selecting a unit from a stack, or one in a city).

You don't need to Alt-TAB out though. Just click on your banner at the bottom of the screen (which takes you to your capital) and it'll be all right again. I've made a habit of clicking it at the end of every turn at least.

Now, with random events, this bug is much more annoying than before since when you get a random event with the bug active you can't see the actual results of the choices without the mouseover, but just their flavour descriptions. Quite frankly this can cause a lot of unnecessary damage, or prevent you from seizing an advantage.

I have encountered this bug as well, but hitting ALT+TAB to get to my desktop and going back seems to fix it. I take it to be a minor annoyance really, it's not that much trouble. Although I find it interesting that this is related to it locking out your keyboard. I was becoming frustrated last night when it wouldn't let me rename the city I'd just founded. The dialog box was there, but the keyboard didn't seem to work. Eventually I just gave up and I was able to rename it next turn.

Is it possible that this keyboard lockout happens fairly often? It happens to me a lot that I cannot cycle units by pressing "W" for the wait command. I end up having to go click on a unit manually. I don't know if ALT+TAB will fix that, it never occured to me to try.

I've also noticed that sometimes I have to give a go-to order twice before it "takes". Is this possibly because the first command wakes the unit from its fortify status and then only the second command actually moves it? Can anyone else confirm this?

I've seen that also, LeeT. I click my unit, scroll over somewhere, right click on the place I want them to move, and it seems to cancel. Though sometimes the command does get through and the next unit is selected for orders - but the screen doesn't scroll to that unit so I think that the order didn't take and do it again.

Whether that's another face of the same bug or not, I have no idea, but I've definitely been seeing it.

I get both too. The second isn't a keyboard thing though, I guess - I usually click the "Go to" button with the mouse and use it to send a unit somewhere, but often have to repeat it. And I get it for units that are active, not fortified or anything.

Again, you don't have to Alt-Tab, try just clicking your banner. That way you also can use the additional memory savings in the .ini file, which disable Alt-Tab.
