disappointment when finally winning game?

LOL, interesting replies!

@The Trooper: Yes, my fav movie ever :D

@Riker: Quality, might have to try that some time hehe

@Turner_727: Wow, 60 hrs?! I guess I'll get that if I do a no condition win! :)

Do a builder Large Pangea Spaceship victory, and you'll have a long game easy enough....

Ha! That's exactly what my current game is! ... and it's taking 60 hours (or more)!

I usually feel a tinge of regret as a Huge milked game draws to a close (how does 160 h sound?), but there's anticipation of the next one too.

Got my longest beat by about 50 hours....

160 hours! That's how many hours I work in a month!

The only allowable win in my game is...domination, conquest and space shipe, hehehe so when i win i had a lots of fun and you can wage war in modern time.

diplomatic or cultural win is a joke IMO.

I change the victory conditions so that a Domination victory requires 35% land and 40% population. This usually gets me to the victory screen before the game gets tedious.

Everytime I go on to win a massive game I feel such a pang of disappointment when it suddenly flashes up YOU WIN!! It's like, all that time you spend and then bang, all over
You know, most wins are official long after they're achieved, as people are stating - and so the game is boring, but I gotta agree with the disappointment thing in another way. I hate it when I'm massing a huge army to crush the #2 guy, or I'm finishing off the pesky Civ that's managed to keep a city or two alive while I try to rid the world of him, etc - then bam! You win!

Win!? Catherine's still alive and taunting me - I don't care if i outnumber her 100-2 in cities, that @*!#% is going down!

yeah.

I often take great pride in seeing that little victory box appear, although (if I haven't already done so) I'll wipe out those last few civs by selecting the "play a few more turns option" It just doesn't fell like a victory unless I have conquered the world!

I wouldn't know, having never won a game......yet! I played the game for a month or so then got so frustrated (see my other post) that I went back to Starcraft (can you believe it?) I think I will go home tonight and start a new game and see how I do.

You know, the day StarCraft came out I made the clerk go into the back and open a crate that was being unloaded off the truck. That was like 10 years ago, and the game is still packed on battle.net. I remember when people used to try and say other RTS's were better, but they never lasted even a year, let alone 10. StarCraft's a classic, much like Civ.

If you need help in Civ, check out the War Academy on the main page here. Obviously these forums are very useful as well.

Few quick pointers:

1) Expand, expand, expand - until there's nothing but a few tiny islands left.

2) Build workers like they're going out of style. Get 1-2 per city, depending on your difficulty level, with an additional 1-2 for cities who have jungle or marsh to clear.

3) Trade to everyone, 10 gold from 10 Civs is better then 80 gold from 1 Civ. Plus, that 1 Civ will turn around and take that 10 gold from the other 9 Civs, thus gaining 10 gold and your tech - while you only gained 80 gold & a rival. Go for "per turn" deals - they keep you at peace longer too.

4) Raze London - burn it to the ground - TO THE GROUND!!

5) Don't break treaties of any kind, it'll be held against you for the game.

That should get you going.

Although it can be boring conquering the last few tiles to get to 67% of a map, remember CIVII? When the only way to get a non-spaceship victory was to conquer every.... single.... city? Now THAT was some serious late-game tedium!!

CIVIII actually came a long way toward eliminating the endgame duldrums.

I'm detecting some frustrations here? :)

Usually I hate the victory pop-up. When I was conquering the world, I only needed 1 more city, poof: domination victory... ARGH

And when everything is going great, I allways seem to win by diplomacy... AND ALL I WANT IS A WORLD WAR!!!! WITH HUGE STOCKPILES OF MODERN ARMOR, ICMB'S FLYING AROUND MY EARS, AAAAH!!%$#!@

Ehm, yeah, sometimes I like winning, but I should uncheck every condition, only conquest, and (if it's possible) double the max turns...

Actually England was never a problem in Civ, it was too many movies that gave England a bad name that caused that response. Maybe also because I've got some German, Irish & Scottish blood in me too. Well, that and the fact that my old roommate adored English customs and always, always, always had to play them, and thus I always, always, always had to nuke London, win or lose - just to piss em off, heh.

If you have a specific goal and/or strategy before you start the game, especially if it is not your normal goal/strategy, I think the victory screen can't be disappointing. I just finished a game where I decided to not capture a single enemy city, and even though it was REALLY BORING at times it was a new experience.

When I get to te point where I get bored I start to do stuf just to let the other civs catch up.

Like one time I was #1 () and the the other civs where pikking on the gandi. me being the good soul that I am  started protecting them from the others even though gandi wished me directly into a very VERY hot place :devil2: , but hé I had to keep myself sane :twitch:. :D
