Disbanding cities?

I've been reading various posts and several mentioned disbanding cities. Is there a way to abandon or raze one of your own cities? Or do you always have to give it to another civ. first, and then raze it?

You can simply build workers/settlers to get rid of it. You just have to make sure that there is no more growth when the settler is ready the next turn, so turn the last / 2 last citizens into entertainers!
