When you disband a unit, what happens to the shields you obtain? Are they applied to whatever you're building in that city, so that it gets completed faster? I assume some of them are eaten up in corruption, if the city has any.

What if you're building wealth in a city? Do the disbanded units' shields just get wasted?

The shields do go into the cities production, but won't get applied if the city is working on a wonder.

The corruption and wealth questions I'm not 100% sure about, so I'll leave those for others.

No, all of the shields are added to the current build (except wonders).

Yes.

No, none are lost due to corruption. You get 1/4 of the unit's shield cost (rounded down of course. A 10 shield warrior divided by 4 = 2.5, but you only get 2 shields added). Nothing happens if you are building wealth.

If you are building wealth then you are doing something weong. Even building units just to disband them in other cities to speed up construction there is preferable to wealth.

Not always. Sometimes you need cash more than you need buildings or units. <professorial voice> The only absolute in civ is that there are no absolutes in civ. </professorial voice> :)

Be careful disbanding units in a town that you have on a wonder prebuild or in one that's building a wonder already -- if you disband there, you won't be able to switch to a wonder until the current build completes, nor to switch from your current wonder build to a different one.
