Since Gamecatcher did not attack us, Shen Ling continues to recruit a settler which will be completed in 2 turns.

We must determine a location for our next city. All suggestions are welcome. I intend to poll this matter within 24 hours, so get your suggestions in now, instead of later.

My personal preference would be to settle near the incense for now. This will allow Shen Ling to grow to size 6, which could be a great benefit to us. Since I would also like to settle on whale's point one day down the road, we shouldn't crowd that area either.

I recommend that we settle on the tile north of the lake, immediately between the two incense tiles.

Incense sounds good to me, 40J. We may need some to control the stench of war. I agree with your placement, also.

We already have horses, croxis - well, we'll have them at the beginning of next turn. :D

Also, I think any spot to the right of the incense would be too far away for the moment. I think that from the spot between the incenses, it's a quick jump over to the northern iron too. Something to consider if we can't dislodge the GCA vermin from our Iron Peak.

Here's an old plan I drew up some time ago.

The grey indicates where Cha Ching and the Iron city are right now. Ignore one and two - these were the sites I proposed for the two cities.

Green was placed for the double whale, yellow for a tiny temporary filler city to collect incense, blue as a secondary iron source with growth potential (flood plains), with dark blue and pink being general cities with excellent potential.

We need another productive city people!!! Settling in the dry insence may be a wasted investment for about 20 turns until we get a road around there. I say we should take the pink city most definatley becuase we could use it, insence city will just sit there as an outpost growing every 20 turns. While we take the pink, then we take the insence when we got a road built over there. Does anyone see my point????

amirsan I agree completely!

Our next city should be at the location with the best food/commerce/production (WITHOUT worker jobs!) to the lowest corruption. Luxeries be damned!

I totally disagree.

For one, building near the incense would prevent anyone from wandering around the lake to our exposed northern flank. Two, connecting the incense will add one additional happy face to our entire nation. That means Shen Ling can grow to size 6 without fear of riots! That is a significant boost to productivity and to our commerce efforts.

Building on the pink site at this time would only reduce the number of productive tiles available to Zhi Gang. Furthermore, building on the pink would not extend our borders significantly which is something we really need to consider as our neighbors are beginning to wander through lands that we wish to claim for ourselves.

I say no to building in the south! It is an inward move at a time when we desperately need to be expanding outwards! Expanding to the north will bring us closer to the northern iron source - another strategic point I might add, as we may not be able to remove the GCA warrior from the eastern source for quite some time.

We must expand! Build to the north by the incense!

If only those plains were grasslands...

I just recently played a game as the Americans, and most my empire was on plains. Until railroads, my empire sucked (after railroads it was a nation of great production and food).

The single biggest problem was getting all those workers mobolized for essential tasks of getting an average of 2 food per tile.

True, the city won't be a growth powerhouse due to the lack of food nearby, but it will provide two vital things: incense and a link to the northern iron.

Incense will increase happiness throughout the empire - something not to be taken for granted (the equivalent of a temple in each city, or 5 cities x 60 shields = 300 shields.

Expanding towards the northern iron will essentially cut the landmass in half making it impossible for troops from either nation to get by unnoticed - definitely a strategic advantage.

thats true...

I see. But we will only have 3 "productive" cities. We should just use a worker to build a colony for that reason. About expanding toward our neighbores, we should just expand toward BoP for that reason! Expanding north isnt going to do much for a while but finding another GameCatcher city to our east will hurt us even more.

Certainly a valid concern, but I think you're selling the potential of that incense city short. After all, it will still be within a relatively short distance to the capitol.

I would also like to propose the dark blue location on Oct's map (E of game, SE of lake).

This site may well be a good compromise for us. It's close, it could get access to the incense, it has some productive tiles nearby.

Minister Octavian, would you be so kind as to post a poll on this subject ASAP so that our settler (which will be ready next turn) will have a destination before we get the turn?

Recommended sites to date (I hope I don't miss any):
  • Incense City (NE of Yellow)
  • Whales Point (Green)
  • Hunting Cabin by the Lake (Dk Blue)
  • Southern Shore (Pink)
  • Tweener (W-NW of Black aka 2)
Okay, so nobody volunteered that last one until now, but it would be a good tweener town snuggled nicely in those hills halfway between Shen Ling and Yun Feng.
