Ute Nation: annexed by the Pueblo Corporate Councile in 2067

On an unrelated topic, I've changed my current plans and I decided to write the Big Brother pedia next. Right now I've got the original material from 1984, the depiction of IngSoc and Airstrip One from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and some minor ideas I'm thinking about weaving in (e.g. linking the rise of IngSoc with a possible outcome of Operation Sealion). Any ideas are highly appreciated!
Oh, and I do remember that our 1984 takes place in 1948.

Cool beans! Just a few things... Mega-City Two really ought to grow out of Los Angeles, which is much farther south on the map. Right now it's up by San Francisco and Sacremento. And what's the Women's Country from?

As for Big Brother, Operation Sealion may not be necessary. Keep in mind that pre-war Britain had a fascist movement of its own. The Big Brother movement could easily grow out of the British Union of Fascists, or to use a fictional version, the Blackshorts, Roderick Spode's party from the Jeeves and Wooster stories.

Be sure to include Greyfriar's from the Billy Bunter stories. LOEG used that as BB's background and so am I.

Another thing that LOEG used that I like... have you heard of The Prisoner? LOEG makes the Village from that show to be a vestige of the Airstrip One years that remained open until at least the 60's. Could be an interesting detail to work in.

Women's Country is from Sheri Tepper's novel The Gate to Women's Country. The novel depicts a matriatchy where males have been degraded to servitors and warriors. By the way, I like the similarity of Women's Country and the Blacklands regarding the complete turn of social hierarchy.
The Holylanders derive from the same novel and seem to be descendants of todays Mormon society practicing polygamy. Treating women as slaves to their husbands I connected them with Scudder and Gilead by turning them into a semi-independent exclave.

Right, because of Blade Runner. Sorry, I forgot about that. Los Angeles fits much better as it has a higher population density, too. Additionally, the outbreak of a Zombie virus which finally led to the destruction of Mega-City Two could be linked to the Vampirism virus of I Am Legend.

Here's the updated map including an arrow that represents the only North American nation not shown on this map: Yucatán, which became independent from Aztlan in the 2060s.

WAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. PEDIA IS FINISHED.

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU. BUT NOW YOU WATCH BIG BROTHER!

Spoiler :

HAROLD "BIG BROTHER" WHARTON (1883-1951)

DICTATOR OF AIRSTRIP ONE, FOUNDER OF INGSOC

On January 3, 1883, Harold Wharton was born in Putney, London, into a middle-class family, the seventh of eight children. His father was Henry Wharton, a solicitor, and his mother was Ellen Bravery Watson, the younger sister of Dr. John Watson, the left hand of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. Harold attended his schooldays at Greyfriars School located near the market town of Courtfield. Harold's life in school was relatively uneventful until he reached the Remove, the Lower Forth class, when he became form captain, following the bully George Bulstrode. With his new position as captain, Wharton became known as a stubborn, strong willed bully and as a natural leader. He frequently participated at the adventures of fellow student William "Billy" Bunter. In 1904, Wharton graduated with a Second Class Honours BA in Modern History. He then trained as a lawyer, and was called to the Bar in 1906.

From 1906 to 1909, Wharton worked as manager of Haileybury House, a club for working-class boys in Limehouse in the East End of London, where he allegedly met and worked for the criminal genius Dr. Fu Manchu who was hiding in his Limehouse lair after a bloody gang war against Professor James Moriarty and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. He joined the Independent Labour Party in 1908, and became active in London local politics. When the assassination of Freedonian aristocrat Alexander Teasdale in 1914 triggered World War I, enlisted in the British Army. During World War I, Wharton was given the rank of captain and served under Herbert Kitchener in the Gallipoli Campaign in Turkey. After a period of fighting in the heat, sand, and flies he became ill with dysentery and was sent to hospital in Malta to recover. This may have saved his life, as while he was in hospital he missed the Battle of Sari Bair in which many of his comrades were killed. The Gallipoli campaign had been masterminded by Winston Churchill. Wharton believed that it was a bold strategy, which could have been successful if it had been better implemented. This gave him an admiration for Churchill as a military strategist. In 1917 he had been promoted to the rank of Major and until the end of the war his soldiers referred to him as "Major Big Brother". After the war, he became interested in local politics in the immediate post-war period, becoming mayor of the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney in 1919, one of London's poorest inner-city boroughs. In early 1922, Wharton married Bessie Bunter, the little sister of his former schoolmate Billy Bunter. Their four children were Janet Helen (born 1923), Felicity Ann (1925), Martin Richard (1927) and Alison Elizabeth (1930).

During the interwar period, Wharton became more and more involved with politics. At the 1922 general election, Wharton became the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of Limehouse in Stepney. In the following years he was appointed member of a Royal Commission and later Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster until he left the Labour Party after its rejection of his proposals for solving the unemployment problem in 1930. Together with fellow politician Sir Roderick Spode, 7th Earl of Sidcup, Wharton formed the British Union of Fascists in 1932. Informally members of this party were called "the Black shorts". In the midst of World War II, Nazi Germany invaded England according to Operation Sealion in 1940. Under the famous Field Marshal Erwin Rommel Nazi troops attacked London and nearly succeeded in defeating the British defenders. While the battle still was being fought in the streets of London, Harold Wharton secretly met with Emmanuel Goldstein, a high-ranking member of the Labour Party. They combines there political ideologies to a party called "Ingsoc" (English Socialism) and together, they used the current weakness of the British military to initiate a revolution causing Ingsoc to become the dominant party of the United Kingdom which was turned into a dictatorship called Airstrip One.

Soon, Airstrip One would become possibly the most oppressive regime in human history. In only a few years, the Ingsoc Party took control over everything spreading its influence from economy, infrastructure and medias to military, security and espionage. The Party formed the Oceania Pact (an intergovernmental military alliance which would one day become the NATO) with nations such as the USA and Canada in order to prevent other states or the United Nations from interfering in British affairs as the Ingsoc regime initiated world wide opposition. With the borders to the outside closed preventing the arrival of information from the outside, the party misinformed its people, that after World War II the world was split up between three powerful superstates stuck in perpetual war: Oceania composed of the Americas, Britain and South Africa; the Stalinistic nation of Eurasia formed when the Soviet Union absorbed continental Europe and the death-worshiping Eastasia.

In 1945 Emmanuel Goldstein - the second important leader of the Ingsoc revolution alongside Wharton - was becoming more and more determined to end the dictatorship and to return to democracy due to qualms of conscience. But Wharton could not led this happen: Instead, he proclaimed Goldstein an enemy of the state and ousted him. Becoming a communist and thus taking refuge in the Soviet Union ("Eurasia") and the People's Republic of China ("Eastasia"), Goldstein began to form "The Brotherhood", a society aiming at the destruction of Ingsoc. At the same time Wharton held a fake election and used his newly gained supremacy to turn himself into a medium of propaganda: referring to an old nickname from his military time, he called himself Big Brother (or "B-B" for short) while spreading propaganda slogans like "Big Brother is watching you", "War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength." and "We have always been at war with Eurasia/Eastasia." In the following years, Big Brother would advance Ingsoc even further by establishing the four Ministries: The Ministry of Love which enforced loyalty and love of Big Brother through fear, a repressive apparatus, and brainwashing; the Ministry of Peace which controlled the British army and navy; the Ministry of Plenty, which kept the population poor and weak to be easier to rule over and the Ministry of Truth, which altered articles, documents and historical texts in order to fit the current political line of the Party and to eliminate the memory of 'unpersons', people who have been executed by the Party. Everybody opposing the Party who wasn't executed immidiatly was either brainwashed or send to a "joycamp" (the official term for forced labor camps) such as "The Village". The Two Minutes Hate became a daily period in which Party members have to watch a film depicting the Party's enemies (notably Emmanuel Goldstein and his followers) and express their hatred for them and the principles of democracy, while English was replaced by Newspeak, the world's only language that grows smaller.

During the Airstrip One period, every move of every single party member was kept under surveillance by an agency of spies and guards called the Thoughtpolice using any method available: armed patrols, helicopters, agents in civvies, eavesdropping neighbors, bugging system and telescreens - machines that work both as security cameras as well as broadcasting devices. Additionally, the telescreens were essentially for spreading the Ingsoc propaganda. While the Thoughtpolice was in charge of interior affairs and surveillance, two new intelligence agencies were formed which would compete with each other for the following decades. These were MI6 led by a man simply called M with James Bond being the most famous agent, as well as a group which would become known as called "The Avengers" after Ingsocs fall, formed by Wharton's brother-in-law Billy Bunter known as Mother and with agents such as John Steed, Emma Peel, Tara King, Harry Lime, Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond, John Drake and Agent Number Six. These newly established agencies would have to fight criminal organizations such as the Goldstein Brotherhood, Quantum and Sebastian Moran's THRUSH. On the other hand, the traditional group of British heroes known as the 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' (which existed in England since the days of Queen Gloriana) was disbanded and its very existence was denied leading to the two remaining members of the League - Mina Harker and Allan Quatermain - to become dissidents fighting the regime.

But the days of Big Brother would come to an end: On November 27, 1951, a plot hatched by the ambitious high-ranking party member Gerald O'Brien led to Big Brother's assassination by a brainwashed citizen called Winston Smith. O'Brien became the new dictator of Airstrip One, keeping all the principles of his predecessor alive, as well as Big Brother's image: only a few high-ranking members of the party that were loyal to O'Brien were informed of Big Brother's death. The rest, as well as the public, thought the leader would still be alive. Thus, Big Brother turned from a real person into an entity crafted by the Party and shaped by O'Brien to be both terrifing and fatherly. But a fraud like this could not be held secret for long: Only mere months later the fraud was exposed and with Big Brother officially being declared dead, O'Brien was unable to maintain power, and conceded to the Brotherhood's demands to reinstated democracy. Soon after, he was voted out of office, and most of the Ingsoc government's programs were reversed leading to the end of Airstrip One. Finally, in 1958, the last secrets of Ingsoc disappeared when the remains of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen stole the Black Dossier - a collection of secret documents which contained the secret history of England - and handed it over to Prospero residing in the Blazing World.

But Big Brother's heritage would live on - literally. His youngest daughter, Alison Elizabeth Wharton Susan, became the grandmother of Adam Susan who would become the founder of Norsefire, a fascist party which seized power over the United Kingdom after World War III aiming at the revival of Ingsoc and thus following in his great-grandfather's footsteps.

Oh and I've got a little addition to the diplomacy texts (this quote must not be forgotten!):

<English>We have always been at war with [CT_CIV_SHORT]! ([OUR_NAME] declares war!)</English>

A couple continuity errors, such as having the Ingsoc government take power during World War II and putting all of continental Europe into Eurasia. Also, in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen universe, Britain is 'de-Big-Brother-izing' by 1958, and has already been democratic again for a few years. I've kept this notion in the timeline.

But otherwise, it's a pretty good entry. :)

You're right, I've postponed the Ingsoc rebellion to 1945.

But regarding Eurasia, I actually ment that Eurasia, Eastasia and Oceania are only fictional nations created by the Big Brother regime (as hinted in Goldstein's book) in order to keep the population in line. Well, Oceania exists but its not a superstate but an early form of the NATO. Sorry that my intentions were not clear, I've rephrased it a bit and I hope it's alright now.

I was actually quite content with my ending. It treats the novel's idea that Big Brother might or might not be a personification of Ingsoc's political line crafted by the Party instead of a real person. Additionally, I think that the Black Dossier being handed to Goldstein is a valid reason for Airstrip One's decline. I mean, Ingsoc practically IS Big Brother.
Please don't feel ignored, Moogi, but in this case I'd like to here cfkane's oppinon before I change anything.

Oh no, that's a perfectly good idea. I like it, I just wasn't sure about the continuity. I could easily go either way, honestly. So, I'll stand by whatever verdict cfkane makes on the matter.

I actually agree with Moogi on this. The IngSoc regime dissolved sometime soon after 1952, when BB was killed. The Avengers didn't get together until the mid to late 60's, and the Dossier was handed over to Prospero, still alive after centuries thanks to his residence in The Blazing World.

Also, The League's version of M is a combination of several characters. His birth name is Robert Kim Cherry (Bob Cherry, one of Wharton's classmates at Greyfriars), and before signing onto British intelligence amassed a fortune in occupied Vienna under the pseudonym Harry Lime. He later became not only "M" but "Mother" as well. The codename "M" in the League goes back to the days of Gloriana, the first M being Jack Wilton. Later "M"s included James Moriarty and Mycroft Holmes.

I added some stuffs here and there to my Celtic entry.

Spoiler :

The Celts were a group of Indo-Europeans who held large claims to Europe when the Mediterranean was dry, they had no opposition to battle them. They would encounter the first of many nations who would try to eradicate them under the Hyborians led by Conan the Conquerer, they were enslaved and occupied for centuries until the Picts led by Bran Mak Morn invaded, the Celts, led by Cuchulainn, allied with the invading Picts and enjoyed a temporary victory until supernatural beings who would become the Sumerian gods and the God of Judaism, Christianity and Islam sent a flood down and destroyed the empires of the Earth (except for Atlantis).

The Major human survivors of the British Isles were fairies who had lived with the Celts. They came in all sizes and varieties. Some were Human-sized while others were able to fit in someone's pouch. Some had wings while others had no need for them. Some of the most well known fairies were the Fairy Godmother, Tinkerbell , the Half-fairy Prince Charming, the Tooth Fairy and Morgan le Fay.

While the Celts were almost completely eradicated by the flood, they would come back and be led by men such as Brutus, who would share Greek knowledge with the Celts and Brennus, who would lead raids into the Greek Cities. They would encounter there third major enemy when the Atlanteans (recorded as the Firbolgs) invaded the British Isles and nearly killed Brutus, the Celts defeated the invading Atlanteans and would establish a society based around warfare. When Andraste, the Goddess of Victory blessed both Brutus and Brennus with magic, Brutus used his powers to make portkeys in common objects to help transportation and left behind scrolls when he died leaving a list of useful spells. Brennus made himself into an immortal and used his powers for villainy. Brennus is said to be the first Highlander as he married many woman and his immortality would occasionally be an inherited trait. Centuries later, Brennus would launch an invasion into the city of Rome and sacked it, however, Rome would have a long memory and invade the Celtic lands.

In 192 BC, Rome has taken over all of the Celts in Italy and was beginning to take over Southern France, Brennus, being a shrewd negotiator, went to Hannibal Barca and they formed an alliance against the young Roman Republic, the alliance lost the war and Carthage was destroyed. Thus, the Celts were the last target on Rome's plate to beat. Rome invaded Gaul (present day France) and during the war, Brennus was killed after centuries of living. The only place in France was a village where Asterix and Obelix, who would go to many countries, including Spain, Judea, India, Egypt and even Atlantis. Other resisting factions included the Iceni tribe led by Boadica and Fionn mac Cumhaill of the the Scottish Celts.

After the Roman empire collapsed, the Celtic lands were split between between barbaric tribes such as the Angles, Goths, Huns and Jutes. Part of Britain was led by the King Lear, who led Brutain where the Anglo-Saxons were not at. The Kingdom of Camelot, led by Arthur Pendragon, was another land in the British Isles. Dyfed would eventually be led by Pryderi, who was blessed with magical powers and built a school to teach the secrets of magic, however, his untimely death did not allow him to teach anything. In France, the Kingdom of Far,Far away was influenced largely by Fairies. The Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming have tried to take the kingdom multiple times, some peaceful, others militarily. When the French forces led by Charlemagne invaded Britain, they almost conquered the British Isles, however, they were stopped by the combined forces of Brutain and Math fad Mothonwyy's Gwyneddian forces. The British Isles were eventually divided into four countries, being Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England. It was at this point that most of the fairies left Earth and went to Fairy World. Others, including Tinkerbell, went and established Neverland.

The English King Edward would later invade Scotland with his considerable armies. The Scottish resistance was led by William Wallace, they wore Belted Plaid and made constant raids against English forces and bases until William Wallace was captured after the Battle of Stirling and executed. Robert the Bruce would take command and free Scotland from England, he then gave power to Duncan, who ruled Scotland with care. Macbeth was visited by a trio of witches and he becomes the King of Scotland after killing Duncan. Macbeth ruled with an Iron Fist for ten years until Macduff killed him. Amadis de Gaula would wander Europe as a merchant and mapmaker and inspired Don Quixote as a child. In the 15 Century, Irish and Scottish shipping was harassed by pirates. Tinkerbell (a fairy that didn't go to Fairy World) and Peter Pan (a teenager that went Neverland to never age) would end the pirates raids on Irish and Scot shipping when they killed Captain Hook.

Magic had been a major factor in there power throughout history, when the Awakening of Magic came and turned a portion of Irish, Scots and Welsh into elves, they gained magical powers while druidic cults were started all around the British Isles. Magic enhanced terrorism was rampant in the British Isles and western France, the UK was forced to give Northern Ireland to Tir na nÓg(which was simply a renamed Ireland), which was presided over by Liam O'Connor while the Church of Ireland banned Catholicism in a doomed attempt to defeat any rebellion. They were mildly affected when WWIII hit on October 23,2077, though they were near collapse due to the infertility plague, nuclear strikes, religious unrest and terrorism. The Celtic culture would live on though despite Hyborians, Great Floods, Greeks, Atlanteans, Romans, French, British and the near collapse of the last major Celtic country.

First of all, I have realized I'm an idiot: it was not even the slightest problem to unite the ideas of Big Brother being only an invention of Ingsoc and the LoEG timeline. Sigh, I think I'm turning old. :old:
I'm afraid, I don't really like merging Bob Cherry with Harry Lime, M AND Mother. That's just over the top.

Ok, I'm gonne rewrite The Avengers but I'd like to keep the idea of listing all those british agents listet in the pedia mostly because of the Cold War. Does anybody here know another British security agency that could replace my current depiction of The Avengers? If not, either I'm going to make all of them part of MI6 or I'll write something along side "an early forerunner of the Avengers".

By the way, just if anybody is curious about Big Brother's early life, I'm going with the LoEG here turning Big Brother into a fictionalized version of Clement Attlee (with a little hint at Oswald Mosley who himself is replaced by Roderick Spode). The hint to Herbert Kitchener is due to the character of Big Brother being partially inspired by Kitchener's WW I propaganda (like this one).

Peter Pan was not a fairy. He was a human child who was picked up by the fairies of Neverland when he decided never to grow old and ran away as a child.

Made that small edit.

Hey, guess who's back?

I'm EXTREMELY sorry for disappearing without a trace - life got really busy really suddenly and I haven't had time to play Civilization, nevermind write about it. But I've had some spare time recently, and while I won't make any commitments, I HAVE been able to work on that entry that I never quite finished... Native America!

Spoiler :
The indigenous people of North America never founded a singular civilization; instead, the continent consisted of countless distinct tribes, cultures, and peoples. “Native America” generally refers to the original inhabitants of land owned by the United States and Canada.

There is little in the way of recorded history for most of these peoples, and most knowledge comes from spoken tradition. As the various groups were different, so were their interpretations of their origins – though many have similar roots, dating from shortly after the Great Flood, caused in the Americas by Wisakedjak. The native Californians were made from the Earth-Maker’s clay, as were the Creek people, formed by Esaugetuh Emissee. Many groups were created by the Great Spirit, known by many names - Wakan Tanka in Lakota, Yowa in Cherokee, Gitche Manitou in Algonquian, who also believed in "Little Spirits," simply called Manitou. Some, like the Navajo, simply sprouted from ears of corn.

During the early years of Native American history, humans co-existed with several intelligent animals. Badger, Great Rabbit, and Crow were vital figures in the formative years of the region. Spider-Woman is credited with the “creation” of mankind by many groups. The most prolific, however, were the tricksters. One of the best known is Raven, who helped feed the first humans, but also stole from native tribes, in one case, even stealing the sun. Coyote, a rival of Ravens, is still spoken of today for his many (alleged) achievements – from the creation of man to the discovery of fire. Kokopelli, while not an animal, was a musical trickster, but also the master of childbirth and fertility. Some creatures were purely antagonistic – such as the wendego and the apotamkin, man-eating demons that stalked the countryside, and the legendary thunderbird, which terrorized the skies of the Pacific Northwest. On the whole, however, the Native Americans lived in harmony with nature, not at war with it.

This all changed with the arrival of European settlers. The first contact with white settlers was in the 11th Century, as Viking explorers reached Canadian shores. However, no permanent colonies were established, as conflicts between the Native Americans and their foreign neighbors were common. It wasn’t until 1492 and the arrival of Christopher Columbus on the island of Hispaniola that the true age of colonization began. The Spanish quickly and efficiently conquered the Caribbean, Mexico, and all regions to the south, and while English and French colonies quickly appeared on the Atlantic Coast.

Jamestown, the first English settlement on the continent, helped set the tone for future interactions between the two vastly different cultures. Pocahontas, the daughter of Powhatan, entered into a romantic tryst with Englishman John Smith, who had recently arrived to aid in construction of the colony under Governor John Ratcliffe. The two groups nearly decimated each other, both sides arming themselves for battle, after the accidental shooting of a Powhatan warrior and imprisonment of Smith. Pocahontas convinced her father to spare his life, literally moments before catastrophe, sparing both sides from a bloody conflict. She would later act as a diplomat between the Powhatan tribe and England, traveling from home in 1616.

Farther north, in New England, there was similar unease between with the Patuxet tribe and the pilgrim settlers. Some, such as Squanto, attempted to unite the two groups, but war seemed likely during the autumn, as food became scarce. However, such tension was dissolved by the disappearance of two children, Johnny Cooke and Little Bear – after their rescue, the celebratory feast held in their honor became known as the first Thanksgiving.

But such interaction became less common as time went on. By the mid-1700s, a concentrated effort by the English settlers had pushed the native population out of what would become the United States of America. The French settlers in Canada, however, formed a more symbiotic relationship with the Native Americans, and united against the British forces – the French and Indian War began soon after. Violence and atrocities were common on both sides, and neither was above involving civilians in the battle. Of particular interest are Cora and Alice Munro, who were escorted by a pair of Mohicans to their father, British army colonel George Munro. Chingachgook and his son Uncas, together, were the last of the Mohican tribe, and together with native-raised Hawkeye – better known as Natty Bumppo, who would later take part in the Bumppo-Black Expeditions – attempted to guide the women and protect against a marauding Huron, Magua. Despite this, the elder sister was killed, leading to further distrust from the British and American forces, even against tribes loyal to the empire.

Natty Bumppo, however, would continue to act as a guide and frontiersman, fighting against other Huron enemies alongside his Mohican companions. While Chingachgook would eventually be killed, Bumppo would continue to aid those who request his help for many years, living well into his eighties and make contact with a wide variety of other native tribes. He would die, as he lived, among the Native Americans, passing away peacefully among a small group of Pawnee in 1806.

From the point of view of the natives, this period was a time of great upheaval. Countless chiefs, tribes, and entire ethnic groups simply disappeared. Some fought, while others conformed to the new Anglican powers. It was at this point that the later Hiawatha appeared. (There are two entirely different figures with the name Hiawatha in history; the later is often considered the more important of the two, and some postulate they were they same figure, an immortal spirit who appeared to different tribes.) The first Hiawatha was a Mohawk chief, from the pre-colonial period, who formed the Iroquois Confederation. Another Hiawatha appeared years later, to the Ojibwe people, becoming their last leader before the coming of the English in the 1700s. Most certainly of divine blood, this Hiawatha was a vocal proponent of integration, leaving his tribe in the hands of Christian missionaries before disappearing into the Great Lakes.

As the United States of America was formed, more and more tribes were displaced. This culminated with the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Modern Oklahoma was designated as an Indian Territory, uprooting tribes such as the Cherokee and Seminole and moving thousands of individuals across the nation in harsh conditions. Throughout this period, anti-American sentiment became the norm among displaced tribes, as fear crept into the regions still untouched. By the Civil War, America had pushed to the Great Plains, and would soon come into contact with the western tribes – the Sioux, the Apache, and others like them.

Like always, some attempted to work with the natives, such as John J. Dunbar, a lieutenant in the US Army who integrated himself with the Sioux tribe and took the name “Dances with Wolves,” and the British aristocrat who would be known only as “Horse.” Further west, Alan Krandal became an active crimefighter in both the Apache and American communities. The outlaw, Josey Wales, would work with both Cherokee and Navajo in the antebellum period. Despite this, a harsh crackdown on the Plains tribes was coming, as Americans rushed to tame the frontier. The spark that started nearly fifteen years of warfare was the Battle of Little Bighorn, a battle between Sioux warriors and cavalry under General George A. Custer, where the American forces were decimated within minutes.

Symbolic of the period as a whole was the Cheyenne Autumn, where Cheyenne leaders Little Wolf and Dull Knife attempted to save their starving tribe by leading them north from Oklahoma to Wyoming in 1878. This act was treated as hostile by the US government and treated as such – a massacre was narrowly averted. On the other hand, the Sand Creek Massacre was just that – Colonel Iverson, in response to a raid on cavalry troops, slaughtered a village full of Cheyenne and Arapaho. This was a symbol of the era as a whole; some native tribes were willing to actively defy their new rulers to survive, while others were decimated for next to no reason.

In the American Southwest, the Apache united with the Navajo under Winnetou, who came to be known as the greatest native leader of his time. Along with his “blood brother” Old Shatterhand (a German immigrant, Karl May), he fought against the US government, generally with small bands of guerilla fighters, and protected his native lands until his surrender in 1886. He died in 1909; Old Shatterhand, after writing his memoirs, passed away in 1912.

On the other hand, in the Pacific Northwest, many tribes would submit peacefully to the incoming settlers. Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce, after an attempted escape, delivered his famous speech, in which he vowed to "fight no more forever." The Quileute tribe, composed mostly of skin-walkers (Native Americans with the ability to transform into "spirit animals"), would eventually forsake the traditional reservation system, instead integrating into society while simultaneously forming an animalistic "pack" of wolf-men.

In 1890, the resistance on the Plains would be put down harshly at the Wounded Knee Massacre. Sitting Bull, famed for his role in the Battle of Little Bighorn, spoke to his followers of the “Ghost Dance,” a religious ritual that would restore the Great Plains to their pre-colonial status. It failed, as the assassination of Sitting Bull and subsequent massacre of his followers put an end to virtually all resistance.

For the next century, Native American groups would each take different stances to their status. Many would be content on reservations, attempting to move forward in their current state, while others allowed resentment of their oppressors to simmer. Alcoholism and depression became common among natives. However, a majority of groups modernized and integrated into society. Many individuals would leave their reservations and, through a variety of circumstances, become crimefighters. Apache Chief, a prominent member of the Superfriends, is commonly considered the pioneer of this movement, and others, such as American Eagle, Wyatt Wingfoot, and Thunderbird, would follow. Some remained on their reservations, but continued in their roles, as they had for centuries, such as the Korin Tribe.

However, those hoping for a more radical change would get their wish in the next century. In 2009, the Sovereign American Indian Movement would make its first offensive against the USA, seizing a nuclear launch facility in Montana. A few years later, the Native American Nations would be formed, and in 2016, under the command of Daniel Howling Coyote, would declare war on the United States. Native American shamans used their mystic abilites, regained with the Awakening of Magic, to quickly end what would be known as the "Great Ghost Dance War." Due to this sudden uprising, and other political upheavels in the era, the once-powerful nation collapsed, and various new nations were formed – the Pueblo Corporate Council, the Sioux Nation, the Ute Nation, and various others across the United States and Canada. After over five hundred years of western superiority, the Native Americans had reclaimed their homeland, and in the years to come, would become major players in the struggle for the continent.

I'm not familiar at all with Hiawatha and Winnetou, and there's not too much information about them that I could find - so, Hiawatha is a dualistic character (since Longfellow originally based him on a Ojibwe mythological figure, I made him, like, a god), and Winnetou is loosely based on Geronimo. And Old Shatterhand is Karl May, since he was an Author Avatar-type character. And the passing mention to alcoholism - I noticed that, in virtually ever modern film or story about Native American life, alcoholism plays a major role. So, if it's not an issue in the real world, it DEFINITELY is in the fictional world.

There was a lot more I could have added, but honestly, I think it's a bit too long as is. So I sacrificed detail for smoothness, and ended up omitting virtually all references to Canada, since I'm unfamiliar with it, there's not much detail on it, and there's very little fiction about it.

*wipes brow*

I've also been mulling over ideas about EarthBound/Mother, Dragon Ball, and The Venture Bros. So, yeah, I'll be back, like, soon, and stuff.

Good to see you back! I like the entry. Loved the reference to The Outlaw Josey Wales!

Not much else I could ask for, except maybe more on Natty Bumppo ("Mohicans" was one book in a series on the character, known as The Leatherstocking Tales). And as much I'm loathe to say this, but the Quileute werewolves from Twilight might as well be put there too. I suppose they could be tied in with the Skin-Walkers, or to you MST3K fans, "A got-damn wurwilf!" And yes, alcoholism is sadly a fact of life in many reservations.

What're you planning next johnny?

Oh, Btw, two of the sources that I had wanted to include in the near future timeline were Asimov's Robot series and Gibson's Sprawl trilogy. I haven't seen them in the timelines yet, but they should be easy to work into the existing continuity.

Probably something... smaller in scale. Probably the Inca, as I had planned before, because not too many things talk about the Inca and, well, I've already done the other two Native American groups.

Also, just thought of a tech quote:

Archery: "If arrows blot out the sun, then we will fight in the shade." ~ Spartan Proverb

I love the Robot stories! We simply must put them in the timeline! I'm sure we can tie them in to some other works of fiction, too.

Johnny, it's great to see you back!
You just had to come back with a big bang, didn't you? The Native American pedia is great! I honestly don't know anything to add. You even thought about Shadowrun. You might want to add the name of the Native American liberation war: the Great Ghost Dance War.
By the way, I simply LOVE the Archery quote!
