If you have to cross deep ocean tiles to get to another land mass but it's on the same continent as your homeland, does it still count as distant lands?

Yes. In fact, I believe it counts anything in the open ocean itself as distant lands because the game counts Bermuda Triangle as a distant lands natural wonder.

If you hover over a tile, it tells you whether it is distant land or not. At least with the common UI mods by TCS and Sukritact. I'm not sure which one it does this - or if it is actually also in the unmodded game.

Yeah this is where the game gets weird. I have seen it do both.

I need to remember to try this in my current game as I just reached Exploration.

I had a recent game where a separate island chain separated by a narrow ocean did not count as distant land... because it is the same continent as my homeland. My settlement there has 5 distant land resources that did not generate treasure fleet despite having quays and shipbuilding.

Sounds like another random bug. Welp, add it to the list of glitches that will no doubt be difficult to fix. Most of the time, an island being part of the same continent doesn't prevent treasure fleets from spawning as long as the treasure resources are there. Usually about 50% of the islands are part of the same two continents as the starting landmass (assuming you're playing continents plus). They tend to be evenly split among the four continents in the game.

I’ve been seeing where people have reported similar issues and I don’t know if it’s a bug or just that the Civilopedia etc doesn’t explain it well enough.

Some of the bugs and general mechanics have been putting me off playing as much as I had planned on doing, when the game was first released I was really enjoying it, then I started seeing the bugs etc.

This would be so annoying! Add to the bug where you stop getting codicies after 7 and I’d rage quit so fast. I downloaded the cheat panel app just to give myself a wildcard attribute any time a bug cost me from getting a legacy. Not a perfect fix but
