As many of you will be aware it was for decades the law in England and Wales that pubs and bars closed at 11pm. There were a few exemptions - a ouple of (IIRC) dockers pubs in Bristol, the london butchers market local (big lads with big knives who work nights quite near parliament) and all the bars in the houses of parliament. The lords were only paid on the basis of the time they spent in parliament working - including the time they spent in the bar they exempted from the closing time leglislation.

Now smoking is being banned from all workplaces, including pubs, bars and clubs - for the good of all. Guess what the only exemption is? Take a wild stab in the dark! 10/10, go to the head of the class. While the proles are leglislated into doing the good thing our masters will have the only workplace (and the only bars) exempt from the ban.

Do as we say, not as we do.

If I have to suffer for the greater good why not the politicos?

Interesting. Smoking and alcohol tended to get banned first in government establishments over here. I am not sure about Congress itself, but most government buildings are now smoke free.

Because they are protecting the common people from harming themselves. Politicians are more responsible and don't need to follow the same rules.

By the way, just curious, but is the Royal Navy still 'wet'?

Not that Im any kind of authority but FAIK not anthing like it was. I've seen video of off-duty sailors having a few beers on ship in the context of celebration and the impression I got was it was a treat, but no idea really.

if anything we should encourage MORE smoking and drinking. It makes incumbents less likely to get elected.

Dont know about that, this is the british electorate we are talking about.

The "pint test" (eg would you like to have a pint with them) is considered a very major issue. Brown is considered to fail the pint test, much to the concern of the spin-doctors.

Given that smoking MPs need somewhere within the Houses of Parliament to be in private, it may as well be their bars.
Smoking is banned in our bars so that we can enjoy the environment and spend time there. Do we want our MPs in bars instead of working?

All the bars close at 11PM? Wow....

Anyway, what were you expecting? A government that actually represented the People, and looked out for their interests, and held itself to the standard it expects of the People? While we're dreaming, let's dream for world peace and immortality as well.

Bars STOPPED SERVING ALCOHOL, UNLESS A LOCK IN not closed. That was their own choice.

Also, 24 hour licenses available for all now.

In other words, they have to bribe the government for permission to keep their business open and serving a certain drink.

It's becoming easier and easier for me to live without ever visiting Airstrip One.

Things are the same way here; Congressmen can smoke in their offices, yet us plebes are forbidden to do so.

Trust me, the last thing the world needs is sobre politicians. When they're drunk they come up with wacky ideas, but if they sobre up they just might implement them.
