There has been a debate in the UU vote about wheather pikes have a numerical advantage over mounted units(knights, cavalry etc.) In the civilopedia it says that pikes are "excellent defenders" against mounted units but it doesn't say if there is a numerical advantage. I think that pikes somehow do better fighting cavalry than it does fighting Med. In. or Immortals.

Confirmed. There is no advantage vs. a particular type of unit in the combat model of civ3, although it would have been a good idea.

pssst... tomoyo... i think it's "third"... you did it on purpose?!?

Great... I went and did a test. Egyptians have 25 cavalry next to separate stacks of 25 Roman Pikes and 25 Roman Hoplites. I apparantly had Preserve random seed on, and the results were exactly the same as each other, when I attacked different stacks.

EDIT: @Tricky: It's on purpose. Today should have been my fourth avatar, but I was away yesterday and did not get to change it.

It would be great idea, whole new dimension to kind of lame battle system in civ.
Odd thing is that in Civ2 there was pikeman what had doubled defense vs. mounted units, now I wonder why they didn't made any other units with special traits. It won't be so hard thing to do I guess.

Damage multiplier is something like collateral damage... I've tested it out, and Pikes and Hoplites defend against Cavalry just as the combat calculator (which doesn't account for this bonus) says...

Even if such a bonus existed, pikes should not get any bonus against cavalry since cavalry do not charge into pikes with lances. They shoot them.

Civ2's bonus for pikes against horses only applied to early non-gunpowder units.
