Do War Elephants Need a Boost?

There appears to be disagreement on the matter, so I figured I'd start a poll. Sorry for the extra thread. What I'm interested in is whether anybody actually incorporates them into their strategy. People have posted suggesting they're good as anti-cavalry, and they may have a point, but I wonder how often they're actually used for that purpose.

I try to capture as many of them as I can find.

all I want is to be able to build them with ivory like in Orbis.

I think they are fine, but they COULD use an upgrade later on via a particular tech.

That would not make them over powered early and retain some of their usefulness late.
